TD Ameritrade Overview

Almost six million individual investors have accounts open at TD Ameritrade, with more being added every day. Why do so many people trust the broker with their money? The following article will explore the strong points that allow TD Ameritrade to attract so many clients and to get rated The Best Brokerage Firm For Individual Investors.

Account Requirements

TD Ameritrade has very simple account requirements and fees. The broker has no minimum balance requirement, no trading requirements, no inactivity fees, no annual fee, and no minimum deposit is required to open an account. Furthermore, closing an account carries no charge. Even closing an IRA is free. Most other brokers have fees in some of these areas. For example, WellsTrade has a $25 minimum balance fee for accounts below $5,000. Scottrade requires a deposit of at least $2,500 to open a trading account, while Firstrade charges $50 to close an IRA. TD Ameritrade's straightforward account policies are easy to follow and remember; investors surely like this trouble-free system.

Funds

Many investors prefer either mutual funds or ETF's rather than individual securities like stocks. TD Ameritrade has an excellent selection of both fund types. On the ETF side, the broker offers more than 100 exchange-traded funds that can be traded free of charge. The only requirement is that commission-free ETF's be held at least one month, which is no problem for most traders. These products have expense ratios far below 1.00%, making them even more attractive. Other brokers don't offer such a large selection of ETF's that are free to trade. Capital One Investing, for example, offers zero. And Vanguard has only 55, and they are all Vanguard ETF's. TD Ameritrade's selection is composed of multiple fund families.

On the mutual fund side, the TD Ameritrade screener returns more than 11,000 products, of which 2,000 come with no load and no transaction fee. This is a sizeable selection for most investors' needs. Other firms provide fewer choices. E*Trade, by comparison, only has 7,500 mutual funds that are open to new investors. TD Ameritrade clearly has a better selection of funds compared to many of its rivals, and this assortment will definitely attract amateur investors.

Customer Service

TD Ameritrade clients can talk to a company associate any time of the day or night over the phone. Although not all investors will need a representative at 3 o'clock in the morning, it's nice to know that the service is there if you need it. Chinese and Spanish speakers can also reach an agent during certain hours of the day.

The broker has more than 100 brick-and-mortar locations that are open during normal business hours across the United States. These branches certainly attract investors who prefer old fashioned in-person service.

Other brokerage houses simply don't provide the level of customer service that can be obtained at TD Ameritrade. Ally Invest, for example, doesn't have any physical locations. Capital One Investing doesn't provide 24/7 service, and OptionsHouse doesn't offer any foreign language service.

Cash Management Options

Some of the best cash management features available through brokerage firms can be found at TD Ameritrade. The company gives free checks and a debit card to all investors. There are no account requirements to qualify. Vanguard, by comparison, requires a staggering $500,000 account balance to receive checks and a debit card; and even then, the broker charges fees for their use. WellsTrade offers a core account with checks and a debit card, although it carries a $100 annual fee.

In addition to the checks and debit card, TD Ameritrade has other perks for customers who use these products. For example, ATM fees that are incurred while using the broker's debit card are reimbursed with no maximum. Firstrade actually charges $1 on top of whatever the cash machine charges.

Another great feature that TD Ameritrade offers is additional FDIC insurance for balances. The broker moves the cash deposits of its clients into multiple banks, which doubles the standard $250,000 FDIC insurance. Schwab, by comparison, does not have such a structure; so its clients only receive the normal insurance limit.

Trading Tools

Excellent trading technology is available for all clients at TD Ameritrade. Amazingly, the broker does not charge anything to use its trading tools, including its very advanced desktop platform thinkorswim. Most other brokerage houses, including Fidelity and Merrill Edge, maintain frequent trader requirements for their most advanced trading systems.

Investors who don't need the complexity of thinkorswim can use web-based Trade Architect, a simpler platform. Like thinkorswim, it offers watchlists, account and position information, order entry, and live streaming of CNBC. But it doesn't have the same level of complexity as thinkorswim. Having a more user-friendly system like Trade Architect is great for average investors.

Three mobile apps are available to TD Ameritrade customers, along with a platform for Apple Watch. Several features are available on these apps, including mobile check deposit, funds transfer, and video news.

Review

TD Ameritrade brings a lot to the table that average investors can benefit from. With no account minimums or trading requirements, it's easy to open an account and try out all the great advantages the best brokerage account for individual investors offers.
