Best Brokerage Firms

Kiplinger magazine 2009 discount online stock brokerage reviews and ratings.

Kiplinger magazine have released its annual online stock broker ratings for 2009. The authors of the article compared brokerage companies on their Research and Tools, Commission and Fees (based on accounts with at least $50,000 balance), Investment Choices, Ease of Use, and Customer Service. Unlike Smart Money magazine stock broker rankings trading commissions and fees ARE a factor in Kiplinger ratings but, strangely, not the most important factor.

At the top spot of 2009 Kiplinger magazine brokerage rating is Fidelity Investments - it got 5 stars out of 5 possible in Research and Tools, Investment Choices and Ease of Use. When looking at the results, you have to remember that ratings are based on accounts with at least $50,000 in balance. For all 3 companies at the top of the list the cost of trading and maintaining account will be substantially higher if your account balance is less than 50K. And, of course, the ratings would be completely different in that case.

TradeKing got the fourth place according to Kiplinger and it's in the second place in our brokerage ratings. Like with Smart Money magazine 2009 brokerage ratings there are a lot of well-known brokerage firms that are missing in the Kiplinger ratings, like Interactive Brokers, MB Trading, TradeChoice and Trademonster to name a few.

A lot of the ratings below are very questionable. For example, how did Zecco with their free/$4.50 trades got only 4 stars in Commission and Fees category and Charles Schwab with their hefty $12.95 got 5 stars? Or Scottrade with $7 trades and very few fees got the same 3 stars as Muriel Siebert with $14.95/trade?

Online Broker Commission Cost Research and Tools Commission and Fees Investment Choices Ease of Use Customer Service
Fidelity $10.95
Charles Schwab $12.95
Muriel Siebert $14.95
$4.95
E*TRADE $9.99
Optionshouse $4.95
TD Ameritrade $9.88
WellsTrade 100 free per year
Firstrade $6.95
OptionsXpress $14.95
Zecco Trading 10 free per month
Scottrade $7

Some of the companies mentioned in the Kiplinger magazine 2009 brokerage rankings are currently running promotions for new customers. This is the list of stock broker promotion codes.

In our brokerage ratings brokerage fees and commissions (your cost of trading and maintaining account with a particular stock broker) is the most important rating factor.
