$1 stock trading commission 2010

Is it possible to get $1 stock trades?

Many people are asking me if there are brokerage firms that charge $1 or less to buy/sell securities. And my answer is "Yes". Stock broker commissions came down a lot during the last decade. The competition among brokerage houses is intense and that means low prices and huge savings in trading fees for investors who are willing to shop around and transfer their account to another company.

There are, in fact, two discount stock brokerage firms where you could buy and sell stocks for one dollar. But with conditions. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Option #1

Zecco gives you 10 FREE stock trades EVERY month if you have at least $25,000 account balance OR make at least 25 trades a month. Otherwise it’s flat-rate of $4.50 per trade (which is extremely good). So with Zecco you could actually trade for free if you have $25K and make up to 10 trades a month. And you could have about $1 stock commissions if you have $25K in balance and make 11-13 trades a month.

Option #2

Interactive Brokers charges just $0.005 per share with $1 minimum trading commission for SMART routed orders, which means that if you buy up to 200 shares it will cost you just $1 brokerage commission. You have to keep in mind additional costs though: Interactive Brokers will charge you $10/month if your trading commissions are less than $30/month. Also, it gets prohibitively more expensive to trade with Interactive Brokers the more shares your order has: 1000 shares is $5, 2000 shares is $10, $5000 shares will set you back $25.

Brokerage fees and commissions are much lower than they were just a few years ago. There is no reason to pay more than $7 to buy/sell stocks. Here is the list of lowest stock commission brokerage firms.
