M1 Finance Transfer OUT Fee (ACAT Fee)
M1 Finance applies a $100 fee when you transfer an account out ($200 for an IRA because M1 also charges a $100 IRA termination fee).
M1 generally applies this fee to outgoing ACAT transfers; however, some brokers will refund the charge if you move at least
a $10,000 account. Charles Schwab
is one such company.
M1 Finance Wire Fees
M1 Finance does not charge a fee for incoming wire transfers, while outgoing domestic wire transfers
cost $25. The sending financial institution may charge its own fee for an incoming wire. M1 only
supports wire transfers to and from U.S. financial institutions.
M1 Finance ACH Fees
M1 Finance does not charge a fee for standard ACH deposits or withdrawals to a linked bank account.
However, returned ACH transfers may be subject to a $30 fee. M1 may also charge a $5 fee for an
ACH notice of change or correction.
Transfer M1 Finance Account to Charles Schwab
First Step: Open a new Charles Schwab account. You’ll have several account types to choose from. Some of these are not offered by M1 Finance, so make sure you do not select one of those. Keep in mind that the account type at Schwab must match the account you currently have at M1.
Second Step: Next, prepare your M1 Finance account for the transfer. If you are making a full account transfer, allow trades to settle and cancel any pending orders before the transfer begins. It is also preferable to eliminate a margin balance because the securities being transferred may be serving as collateral.
M1 Finance cannot transfer fractional shares. With a full account transfer, the fractional shares are sold, and the proceeds are swept to the receiving brokerage after the whole shares have moved. With a partial transfer, the fractional shares stay in the M1 account.
Third Step: Sign into your Charles Schwab account and start the transfer request. Open ‘Move Money’ and then choose ‘Transfer Account.’ The mobile app also provides an account-transfer option.
You must identify the delivering brokerage on Charles Schwab’s transfer form. Which clearing firm you enter depends on the type of M1 account you have. Individual, Joint, Custodial, and Entity brokerage accounts are cleared through M1 Finance LLC, while other M1 investment account types use Apex Clearing. Review your M1 account statement to verify the clearing firm before you submit the transfer.
Charles Schwab’s transfer form allows you to request either a full or partial transfer. Provide the required information for your M1 account, and the transfer request is ready to submit.
Fourth Step: You can monitor the requested transfer on Charles Schwab’s website. Click on the ‘Activity’ tab under ‘Deposits & Transfers.’
