Etrade Cost

Etrade is one of the best known companies in the industry. The broker charges a flat fee of $0 per stock or exchange traded fund (ETF) transaction. For those beginning with an investment of $10,000+ dollars, Etrade will add an additional up to $600 to qualifying accounts (see link above).

The 60-day free trading window is particularly advantageous to investors who already have an idea of how they would like to invest their money. Not only can an investor get into the market without commission, an investor can place timed trades in their account, allowing them to invest at a scheduled pace. For example, if an investor has $8,000 to invest in Coca Cola (KO), the investor can set up a weekly $1,000 purchase of stock at market price. After the eighth week, the investor would not be liable for any commission and would have slowly invested using the dollar-cost averaging method — a strategy advocated by many leading personal finance coaches. On the other hand, if Coca Cola closed its doors after the second week, the investor would lose $2,000 (2 x $1,000) but retain the remaining $6,000 in an Etrade FDIC-insured money market account.

Although IRAs are meant to be long-term investments, there may come a time when the investor needs to liquidate his holdings and remove funds from the account. Etrade charges $25 for each distribution — money out of the account via bank wire or check — which is deemed “premature” in nature by US tax code. Although the term “premature distribution” may sound intimidating to most investors, Etrade does not withhold or garnish any of the proceeds or distributions from an IRA account. The website will simply provide information on how to report the transaction to the IRS, charge the $25 distribution fee and wire the money into your personal checking account.

Unique Etrade Features

Etrade accounts include an E*TRADE 360 window showing customers their account summary, performance by time and total allocation by type of security (cash, bond, stock, ETF, etc…) The 360 window differs from other brokerage firms in that it also allows the user to simultaneously view the portfolio of all brokerage accounts linked to the user and make trades in real time with streaming quotes.

Etrade offers increased functionality compared to its online brokerage competitors:

  • Excellent, light-weight mobile app for iOS and Android devices
  • E*TRADE 360, a comprehensive control panel allowing real-time transactions
  • Introductory offer of up to $600 bonus for new accounts of $25,000 or more.

There are still several reasons an individual might consider starting an IRA account at a competing brokerage:

  • Etrade charges higher transaction fees on mutual funds ($19.99 versus $0 at Firstrade)
  • $25 early distribution fee (TDAmeritrade doesn’t charge)
  • Difficult to access account from different IP addresses while traveling. New account verification is also much more stringent than at competitors.
