Do you need a debit card for daily cash management? If so, Merrill Edge has something in mind for you. Here’s the lowdown:
Overview of Merrill’s Debit Card
With a Cash Management Account (CMA), investors at Merrill Edge can get a Visa debit card. The CMA is a securities brokerage account but carries the “Cash Management” moniker because of its emphasis on daily money management.
The debit card linked to the CMA is a Visa card. It is technically a deferred debit card, which means card purchases are debited from the account once per month. ATM withdrawals and cash advances are debited when Merrill receives notice of the transaction.
Merrill accepts multiple account registrations on a CMA with a debit card. Trusts, joint accounts, and individual accounts are a few examples. Custodial and estate accounts do not qualify for the debit card. Some account types at Merrill can have more than one debit card.
Using Merrill’s Debit Card
Merrill Edge’s deferred debit card is a Visa card. As such, it can be used at millions of locations worldwide. Both ATMs and point-of-sale (POS) terminals are fair game. You should contact Merrill ahead of international travel to let the firm know your travel plans with the card.
Once the card is activated, it cannot be locked or unlocked through an online cardholder control. To place a lost-or-stolen block on the card, you must call Merrill.
Benefits of Merrill’s Debit Card
The Merrill Edge deferred debit card comes with a variety of benefits through Visa, including:
- Travel insurance
- Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
- Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance
- Lost Luggage Reimbursement
- $0 Liability Guarantee
- And more...
Transaction Limits on Merrill’s Debit Card
If you do opt for the Visa deferred debit card from Merrill Edge, be aware that the financial conglomerate imposes the following daily limits on its usage:
| Transaction Type | Daily Limit |
| ATM withdrawals | $2,500 |
| Cash advances | No limit by Merrill, although some banks may cap them at $5,000 |
| Purchases | No limit* |
*Purchases are limited by the account’s purchasing power or spending limit. Remember, this is a debit card, not a credit or charge card.
Requesting a Debit Card from Merrill
During your initial application for the CMA, you should be presented with the option to add a Visa card to the account right away. If you didn’t get one with your initial application and later decide the Visa deferred debit card is right for you, you can call Merrill’s Investment Center to request one.
Fees and Minimums
The Visa deferred debit card from Merrill Edge has no annual card fee. The self-directed CMA has no account minimum or annual account-maintenance fee. Merrill charges no transaction fee for ATM withdrawals, and Bank of America ATMs do not impose an ATM operator surcharge. Outside the Bank of America network, the ATM owner may charge a withdrawal fee, and Merrill Edge Self-Directed does not reimburse the operator’s surcharge.
An international transaction fee of 2% of the U.S. dollar amount applies to transactions that occur outside the United States and are submitted to Visa in a currency other than U.S. dollars. This includes eligible purchases, credits, ATM withdrawals, and cash advances. A cash advance conducted through a human teller costs 0.25% of the principal, with a $2.50 minimum.
Schwab as a Fallback
Although Merrill Edge offers some good trading services, its debit card has some notable downsides. For example, it doesn’t come with a 0.00% foreign-transaction fee. If you travel outside the United States and make transactions in currencies other than the greenback, you may want to consider Charles Schwab.
Schwab has a Visa Platinum debit card that carries no foreign-transaction fee. Schwab’s card is an immediate debit card, which may or may not be advantageous, depending on your preference.
Schwab’s debit card can be connected to a savings or checking account. An eligible U.S. Schwab brokerage account can also receive a Schwab One Visa Platinum Debit Card after checking features are enabled.
One downside of Schwab’s Bank Visa card is the daily cash withdrawal limit. Instead of the $2,500 Merrill allows, Schwab’s standard limit is $1,000. The standard daily purchase limit is $15,000, although customers can apply for a higher limit.
Despite a few drawbacks, Schwab’s debit card remains a strong contender in the realm of money management. Another upside of the Schwab Bank debit card is the ability to lock and unlock it. The card can be managed through Schwab’s website and mobile app. Schwab’s Bank debit card is also capable of contactless payments.
