CD Rates at Charles Schwab

If you want to cash in on current interest rates, a Charles Schwab brokerage account is one of the best ways to do it. The investment company provides access to a huge list of fixed-income securities. Some of these have some really lucrative interest rates. Let’s check them out.

Finding CDs on the Schwab Site

To locate certificates of deposit at Charles Schwab, you simply need to open a free account, log into their website (the mobile app and desktop platform will also work for this) and head to the Research tab in the top menu. In the drop-down window, click on the link for “Bonds, CDs, & Fixed Income.”

On the next screen, there will be some digital paperwork that will need to be signed before you can go to the fixed-income tools. Consent to this paperwork, and you’ll see the bond and CD matrix. Rates for both bonds and CDs will be displayed in this matrix.

The top row of the matrix is a collection of maturities. Underneath each maturity is a hyperlinked APY, which is the highest possible APY for that maturity. Click on the hyperlink to go to the search results, which can be a lengthy list of CDs.

Search results can be sorted by a variety of criteria, such as coupon, maturity, and APY. Each CD is hyperlinked. Clicking on this link generates a pop-up window with lots of details. Examples include:

- Coupon frequency
- Dated date
- DTC eligibility
- Yield to worst
- Minimum trade amount
- Insurance status
- Call status

In the far right-hand column, there is another link. This one is for market depth; it shows the bid and ask activity on a CD.

A second CD search wizard is available on the Schwab website. This one is an actual search engine that can look for investments using a variety of parameters. At the top of the CD matrix, look for the link to “Find Bonds & Fixed Income.” On the next page, click on the CDs tab, and you’ll have the screener.

Charles Schwab CD Ladder

Next to the “Find Bonds & Fixed Income” tab is a tab to build a CD ladder. This tool can be used to create a multi-CD order. It’s very user-friendly. Just input the requested details, and several CDs with a variety of maturity dates can be set up for purchase.

How to Buy CDs on Charles Schwab

Submitting a trade for a CD is easy. In the search results, there is a trade link next to each bond (it’s in the far left-hand column). Clicking on this link will create a new page with the CD trade ticket. It shows the minimum amount required to make a purchase. The dollar amount can be filled in with increments of $1,000. For example, for a $7,000 purchase, simply enter a 7 in the amount field. The three zeroes are already displayed. This is a simple way of entering a CD order that’s not available at all brokerage firms.

An order for a CD at Schwab can be entered as either a market or limit order, another unique feature. A third unique feature is an auto-rollover selector. It’s possible to turn this on to reinvest the CD into another CD when the original one matures. A specific lifespan on the second CD can be chosen as well.

CD ladders use the same trade ticket. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to purchase an entire ladder simultaneously. Each CD in the ladder must be purchased in a discrete order.

Charles Schwab CD Pricing

Schwab charges no commissions on trades of new issue CDs. It does say that a selling concession is included in the price, although during our research, we saw prices of $100, which means they are selling at face value. One CD we found from Brentwood Bank was actually selling for less than face value ($99.70).

Charles Schwab charges a transaction fee of $1 per $1,000 bond/CD ($1 per $1,000 in face value) for secondary market CD trades placed online. This fee is subject to a $10 minimum and a $250 maximum per trade.

Other Cash Options at Schwab

CD investors may be interested in other securities that provide price stability and regular interest payments. On the CD search page we have already seen, there is a section below the CD matrix for bonds. Interest rates for them are hyperlinked, so it’s really easy to go in and look at individual bonds. Researching them and placing trades follow the same guidelines mentioned above for CDs. Here are some rates on U.S. Treasuries:
