Can You Buy CDs on Robinhood?
CDs as well as other fixed-income securities are not available at Robinhood. This absence is a
bit of disappointment given the current reality of high interest rates. That’s where Charles Schwab comes in. It does offer trading in CDs, and many of these have high APYs.
Besides CDs, Charles Schwab also provides a lot of educational materials on CDs along with a handy CD scanner and an easy-to-use trade ticket. These resources make Schwab a powerful platform for trading CDs.
Setting up an account at Schwab is very easy and takes just a few minutes. At the top of Charles Schwab’s
website, there is an orange button to create a new account. Click this button and follow the on-screen prompts to start the online application. Schwab offers many tax-advantaged account types, so you can save on taxes while investing in CDs.
Once your account is open, you’ll find an easy-to-use CD search engine under the Trade tab. You can browse CDs of various maturity lengths, from 3 months to 10 years. Simply select the desired maturity, and Schwab’s software will display the available CDs. The results include details like coupon frequency, minimum and maximum purchase amounts, and coupon rate. A convenient Buy link is also displayed, making it easy to go straight to the order ticket.
If you want to buy multiple CDs, Schwab also has a ladder-builder tool under the Trade tab. This tool allows you to add up to 10 CDs to a single ladder. Schwab’s software makes this process really straightforward.
There is no charge to use the ladder-builder tool. Best of all, there are no commissions on primary CDs when the trades are placed online. Primary CDs are issued directly by the bank for the first time. After purchasing, these CDs can be traded as secondary CDs. Schwab provides a helpful guide for selling secondary CDs. Trades of secondary CDs cost $1 per CD with a $10 minimum commission.
