Charles Schwab Checking Account Review For 2026
|
Does Charles Schwab Offer a Checking Account?
Along with its investing services, Charles Schwab also has a banking division that offers checking
accounts. The account is officially named the Schwab Bank Investor Checking™ Account,
and it includes many useful benefits that typical checking accounts from traditional banks often don’t provide. Here are the details.
Overview of Schwab’s Checking Account
Schwab’s checking account is provided through Charles Schwab Bank. The checking account includes FDIC insurance up to standard FDIC limits.
As the name suggests, the account includes checks. It also includes a debit card that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. Also in keeping with its name, the Schwab Bank Investor Checking™ Account is tied to Schwab’s investing side, so it must be connected to an investment account. A Schwab checking account cannot be opened on its own as a completely separate account.
Schwab Checking Fees and Minimums
Although Schwab does not allow customers to hold only the checking account by itself, the required brokerage account
has no fees and no minimum balance requirement. The checking account also has no monthly service fees or minimum balance requirement, so the combined setup costs nothing, and both accounts can be kept with a $0 balance.
The checking account earns interest. Currently, the interest rate is 0.01% APY.

Opening a Checking Account with Schwab
Schwab’s checking account can be opened after an investing account has already been opened. Once logged in on the website, look under the Accounts tab for the link to open an account.
Another option is to open both accounts during the same application. On Schwab’s website, click the orange button to open a new account, scroll through the list of available account types, and choose the bank account. Schwab will then create one application for both accounts.
Schwab’s mobile app can also be used to open the investing-and-checking account combination. Tap the head-and-shoulders icon in the upper-left corner of the app, then choose the link to open an account in the pop-up window. Scroll down to checking and follow the prompts.
Checking Account Benefits
No fees and no minimums are only the start of what Schwab’s strong checking account offers. The account includes free online bill pay, which can be managed through both the website and the mobile app. During our test of the system, searching for billers and adding them was very simple.
Mobile check deposit is another available feature. Naturally, this tool is found in the app. It is simple to use: take photos of the front and back of the check and submit the deposit. The same feature can also be used for investing and savings accounts.
Schwab’s Visa debit card, which every checking account receives automatically at no cost after funding, provides ATM access around the world wherever the Schwab Bank Visa Platinum Debit Card is accepted. Eligible ATM fees are refunded by Schwab, and there is no stated maximum for this rebate policy. The card also has no foreign transaction fees, making it a strong option for travel.
In addition to the card, checks are also provided at no charge. Additional checks can be ordered through Schwab’s website through its partnership with Deluxe. Standard checks are free.
The website and mobile app both include several settings for a checking account. On either platform, customers can lock and unlock a debit card by clicking or tapping a toggle switch. Alerts and travel notices can be added, and it is easy to request a replacement card or report a card as lost or stolen. Another link can be used to dispute a transaction, and a stop-payment request can be submitted for a check.
Deposits and Withdrawals
One login provides access to all Schwab financial accounts, including investing and bank accounts. Transfers between accounts are fast and simple with Schwab’s website and mobile transfer tools.
Like other checking accounts, money can be withdrawn from Schwab’s bank account through ACH, wire transfer, debit card, and paper check. Schwab also participates in the Zelle network, so Zelle transfers are available as well. The mobile app includes Zelle and ACH tools, while the website includes those tools plus a wire form.
Deposits can be made in similar ways. The main drawback is that Schwab branch locations are not set up for cash deposits into checking accounts, so cash cannot be deposited directly into the account.
