How to Deposit a Check at Schwab

Main Points:

• Charles Schwab customers have multiple ways to deposit paper checks.

• Schwab’s mobile app includes the Schwab Mobile Deposit™ tool.

• Schwab charges no fee to deposit a check, although mailing costs may apply.

If you need to deposit a paper check into a Schwab account, you have several options. Read on for the full details.

Depositing a Check by Mail With a Deposit Slip

The first option is to mail the check to Schwab. Checks can be deposited into eligible brokerage, retirement, and Schwab Bank accounts. A deposit by mail generally needs to include the appropriate deposit slip and an endorsement on the back of the check.

For a bank account, you can use this deposit slip. Deposits into investment accounts must be mailed to an address based on the residential address listed on the account. Schwab directs customers in certain states and territories to its El Paso location and others to its Omaha location. Here are the deposit slips for the El Paso location and the Omaha location.

For either a bank or securities account, be sure to write “For deposit to Charles Schwab brokerage/bank account # xxx” on the back of the check, where xxx is the account number.

A check should be made payable to the registration on the account. If the check is from an outside personal account for deposit into a securities account, it should be payable to Charles Schwab and Co., Inc.

For more complete instructions, including the required deposit form and mailing address, visit Schwab’s Contact Us page and open the section titled “Need to mail us something?” Select the location that applies to the residential address listed on the account.

Branch Office

Schwab has hundreds of branch locations across the United States. Many locations accept check deposits, although deposit services and cutoff times can vary by branch. Check the location’s details before visiting, and a Schwab representative can provide assistance with the required paperwork.

Mobile App

Last, but not least, Schwab offers its Schwab Mobile Deposit™ tool through the mobile app. Open the app and tap More, then select Deposit Checks under Move Money. You can also tap Deposit directly from the Accounts page. Select an eligible brokerage, retirement, checking, or savings account, enter the amount, and take pictures of the front and back of the check. During our test drive of this deposit tool, we found it super easy to use.

Hold Times

All paper-check deposits are subject to verification. For Schwab Bank accounts, deposited checks are generally available on the first business day after Schwab receives them. Longer holds may apply depending on the check, account history, deposit amount, or other circumstances. New-account deposits may be held until the fifth business day, and checks deposited through Schwab Mobile Deposit may be held longer than checks submitted by mail.

Costs

Schwab charges no fee to accept a physical-check deposit. Mailing costs may apply unless you use a postage-paid envelope provided for an eligible Schwab Bank account.
