If you've been using Schwab for its investing services, you should also check out its banking products. Among them is the Investor Savings™ account. Here's the lowdown on this often-overlooked Schwab account:
Overview of the Schwab Savings Account
Charles Schwab isn't just a broker; the company is a financial-services conglomerate with multiple operations. One of the company's banking subsidiaries is Charles Schwab Bank, SSB. The bank is a member of the FDIC and offers both checking and savings accounts.
Schwab's savings account, officially called the Investor Savings account, isn't a brokerage account; it's an actual deposit account provided by a bank. The primary difference is that Schwab doesn't operate traditional bank branches. Although Schwab has local offices, these locations primarily serve investors and don't provide the full range of banking services available at conventional bank branches.
The result is a conventional savings account that is managed primarily online. In return, Schwab Bank clients receive several benefits that many brick-and-mortar banks don't offer. We'll look at those advantages now.
Highlights
Although this is a savings account, an optional Visa Platinum Debit Card can be attached to it. This card can be used for purchases wherever Visa is accepted and at eligible Visa or Plus ATMs. Schwab provides unlimited ATM fee rebates worldwide for eligible cash withdrawals made with the card. The rebate doesn't cover fees for point-of-sale transactions, balance inquiries, stamp purchases, Dynamic Currency Conversion, or transactions other than ATM cash withdrawals in local currency.
Schwab's mobile app and website can be used to manage a savings account. Customers who also have a Schwab brokerage account can deposit paper checks into the savings account using Schwab Mobile Deposit™.
Schwab's debit-card tools include card locking and unlocking, travel alerts, transaction alerts, and fraud alerts. Recent transactions and account statements can also be viewed through Schwab's digital platforms.
Schwab Savings Account Interest Rate
Schwab doesn't charge a monthly service fee for its Investor Savings account. The account's published APY applies to balances of at least $0.01. Fees may apply for certain additional services, such as outgoing wires or expedited delivery.
The primary downside of the Schwab savings account is its low APY: just 0.15% right now.

How to Open a Schwab Savings Account
The second drawback of Schwab's savings account is the lack of an online application despite it being
primarily an online account. To apply for the savings account, you must complete and sign
this fillable PDF form and return it to Schwab.
There are several return methods, including:
- Fax to 888-526-7252
- Drop off at a local Schwab branch
- Upload through secure messaging on the website by opening the Message Center under Service and selecting Upload Document
An existing Schwab savings account can use the same form to update various issues. For example, it's possible to add an additional account owner or edit details on current account owners.
However the form is used, a valid U.S. residential address must be provided on it. Applicants must be U.S. resident aliens or U.S. citizens.
Getting the Debit Card
The debit card is optional on the savings account. If you do want it, be sure to specify such in Section 4 on the application. If you already have a debit card linked to a Schwab Investor Checking account, that existing card will also be linked to the savings account.
Linking the Savings Account
Once opened, a savings account can be accessed alongside eligible Schwab investing and deposit accounts. Transfers can be made between the Investor Savings account and eligible Schwab Bank or brokerage accounts. Transfers between Schwab Bank accounts post in real time 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. Cash moved to or from an eligible linked brokerage account is generally available in seconds, although transfers made outside business hours may not be available until the next business day.
