Public.com Investing

Are you interested in trading cryptocurrency on public.com? If so, read on as we have everything you need to know!

First, let’s introduce Public.com in case you’re unfamiliar with this discount broker.

Public.com (aka Open to the Public Investing, Inc.) is a relatively new and somewhat lesser-known brokerage firm. Since 2019, Public has provided an online stock and ETF trading app that’s available for download from app stores as well as public.com.

Public’s goal is to democratize investing and this seems like a legitimate goal given that they offer commission-free trading, fractional shares, and no account minimums. They’ve gone in on a strategy of gaining endorsement (and investment) from celebrities such as Will Smith, J.J. Watt, Sophia Amoruso, and Casey Neistat, among others.

It’s hard to find specific financials for Public as a privately held company, but they do claim to have a “collaborative community of more than 1 million people.” Given the amount of capital they’ve been raising, it would appear that the broker is growing quickly.

Cryptocurrency on Public

Cryptocurrency (“crypto”) is one of the hottest asset classes for millions of investors, particularly younger and newer ones. As such, it makes sense that Public would try to capitalize on this growing trend.

As of October 2022, Public has begun adding crypto to Public, so members can now buy, sell, and hold crypto assets in the Public app. This is a nice feature for Public customers who can now have a more diversified portfolio with their Public account, as the broker is relatively limited (just stocks and ETFs).

Unlike PayPal or Venmo, who offer a limited number of crypto coins, Public offers a decent variety—11 as of writing. These include the heavyweights (like Bitcoin and Ether) as well as “meme” coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, among others.

To buy crypto on the Public app, simply navigate via the Explore tab. You can add them to your watchlist and invest with as little as $1.

Crypto holdings show up in the same section as the stock market portfolio, which is a nice touch as it allows you to see all your investments on Public in one place.

Plus, you can drag cryptos that you own over to the “Long-Term Portfolio,” which is where you can place investments on Public that you plan on holding for more than one year. This is the same process as with stocks.

Another nice feature when it comes to crypto on Public is that you can set Limit Orders, a feature that’s not available with many other brokers or financial services like PayPal or Venmo.

Having the capability to set limit orders gives you greater control over the price that you buy and sell a given crypto coin.

Another nice thing to see with Public is that they offer some basic educational info with their crypto offerings. For example, you can read about Litecoin, Ether, Bitcoin, etc. before buying. As crypto is a relatively new and volatile asset class, it’s important for would-be investors to educate themselves. It’s nice to see Public offering this right in their app as they do generally target more inexperienced investors.

Lastly, Public uses Apex Crypto to provide cryptocurrency execution as well as custody services.

While there is no crypto wallet available on Public, they understand that there is some customer demand for that so that may be something rolled out at a later date.

You should also know that if you live in New York state you cannot yet trade crypto on Public due to Apex Crypto’s current lack of a BitLicense for New York. That said, Public is hopeful that they’ll soon be able to offer crypto to residents of New York.

Final thoughts

Public is an up-and-coming discount broker that targets more inexperienced investors. Although it has relatively limited offerings (just stocks and ETFs), they’ve now expanded to offering crypto, which is a smart move given how much interest there is in the crypto space, particularly among younger investors.
