Trading Services

Coinbase operates primarily as a cryptocurrency exchange and broader financial-services platform. It currently provides access to more than 300 digital coins, giving customers a very large selection. The available assets include stablecoins designed to track the value of the U.S. dollar.
Coinbase provides services to customers in more than 100 countries. Along with personal cryptocurrency accounts, the company has separate products and services designed for businesses, institutions, and developers.
Coinbase provides futures trading, although availability varies by location. Eligible customers in the United States and most countries in the European Economic Area can access futures products. For U.S. customers, futures are provided through regulated Coinbase subsidiaries, including Coinbase Financial Markets, a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant, and Coinbase Derivatives, a CFTC-regulated designated contract market. The available products include perpetual-style crypto futures as well as standard futures contracts based on cryptocurrencies and commodities such as natural gas and gold.
NFTs (non-fungible tokens) can be accessed through third-party onchain applications with the Base app, formerly Coinbase Wallet (more on that below).
Coinbase provides a variety of optional services and programs as well, with availability depending on location. Coinbase Prime is the company’s institutional prime brokerage platform and includes services such as advanced trading, financing, analytics, reporting, cold storage, custody, and more for qualifying institutional customers in supported regions. Some Coinbase customers can also qualify for onchain lending that uses cryptocurrency as collateral.
Coinbase One is the company’s paid subscription program. Benefits depend on the selected membership tier and can include zero trading fees on eligible simple crypto trades, account protection, increased staking rewards, priority customer service, and benefits from onchain partners.
Cash Management

Coinbase provides customers with both a debit card and a credit card. Its debit card operates on the Visa network, while the Coinbase One Card is issued by First Electronic Bank and operates on the American Express network. As with several other Coinbase products, availability depends on location, and both cards are offered to eligible customers in the United States.
The Coinbase debit card is a Visa prepaid debit card that lets eligible customers spend available U.S. dollars or cryptocurrency on purchases and ATM withdrawals. When cryptocurrency is selected as the spending asset, Coinbase converts it into dollars for the transaction. Eligible cardholders can also receive crypto rewards from purchases.
Coinbase’s credit card is known as the Coinbase One Card. Customers need an eligible Coinbase One membership to obtain the card, which is offered to qualifying U.S. residents. Eligible purchases can earn Bitcoin back, and the card comes with American Express network benefits that include protections such as extended warranty and return protection.
Aside from its debit and credit cards, Coinbase has relatively few services resembling those of a traditional bank. For instance, the company does not provide a conventional cash-management account. It does support stablecoin trading in assets such as USDC and USDG, which are designed to remain pegged to the U.S. dollar.
Methods for depositing and withdrawing money at Coinbase differ according to location, account type, and other circumstances. Available funding choices can include ACH, bank wires, debit cards, SEPA transfers, and PayPal.
Customer Service

Coinbase operates an online customer-support center at help.coinbase.com. In addition to its collection of help articles, the site includes chat support that can connect customers with a live representative. Users can also request assistance from a support agent by phone. Coinbase has phone support in multiple regions, with phone numbers and operating hours varying according to location.
Preferred Coinbase One customers receive 24/7 priority support, while Premium subscribers receive concierge-level assistance. Customers with the Basic membership receive standard support.
Coinbase customers can also lock their accounts when necessary. Activating an account lock prevents additional trading activity and withdrawals.
Website

Coinbase’s website is designed to be accessible to new investors while still offering useful features for experienced cryptocurrency traders. Customers can research digital assets, examine price charts, and enter transactions without much difficulty. The standard trading interface provides several ways to place trades:
- Quick Buy
- Limit
- Recurring
Recurring purchases can be scheduled using several frequency choices. The trading tools are readily accessible from the main Coinbase interface, making it easy to buy and sell assets. Coinbase also provides a convert feature that can be used to exchange one supported cryptocurrency for another.
The website’s navigation system provides access to a large collection of Coinbase features, including:
- Staking
- Promotions
- Advanced API
- Lending
- Taxes
- Onchain verifications
- Derivatives
- And more...
Mobile App

Coinbase also has a streamlined mobile app for customers who want to manage their accounts and trade away from a computer. It offers many of the same trading functions and features found on the website. Coin profile pages include price charts that are relatively basic, but Coinbase provides a separate mode with considerably more advanced trading tools, which we’ll examine next.
Coinbase Advanced

Coinbase customers can switch to Advanced mode on both the website and mobile app. Doing so opens a more sophisticated trading environment with additional tools and capabilities. On the website, the Advanced toggle can be accessed in the lower-left portion of the interface. On mobile, Advanced can be reached through the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner.
Advanced mode delivers much more capable charting, largely through tools provided by TradingView. Traders get access to additional chart styles, drawing tools, and technical indicators. A Depth Chart displays bid-and-ask activity, while another data area provides the order book and recent trade information.
The Advanced trading ticket includes additional order choices, such as TWAP and stop-limit orders. Coinbase Advanced supports bracket orders as well.
Wallet
The Base app, formerly Coinbase Wallet, is Coinbase’s self-custody wallet app. Among its capabilities are sending and receiving cryptocurrency, trading digital assets, and interacting with onchain applications. QR-code features make it possible to scan wallet addresses or display a code when receiving cryptocurrency. Users can also connect with onchain apps and access a variety of other blockchain-based services.
Margin

Coinbase provides leveraged trading through futures, where customers can open positions without posting the contract’s entire notional value. Eligible customers can also use crypto-backed borrowing through onchain lending protocols. These loans are separate from traditional margin trading, and their proceeds cannot be used for trading on Coinbase. Access varies by region, so these borrowing and leverage features are not available to every customer.
Fees and Minimums

Coinbase does not have a general account-maintenance fee or minimum account-balance requirement. Cryptocurrency transactions do have trading costs, with the exact amount determined by several factors. Before a transaction is submitted, Coinbase shows the applicable pricing on the order-preview screen. Customers can often reduce trading costs by using Coinbase Advanced or subscribing to Coinbase One.
Coinbase One customers can qualify for zero trading fees on eligible simple crypto trades, up to the applicable limits of their membership plan. A spread still applies. For customers without Coinbase One, pricing on the standard Coinbase interface is determined dynamically using factors such as transaction size, payment method, market conditions, jurisdiction, and the particular asset. Coinbase One subscriptions range from $4.99 to $299.99 per month or $49.99 to $2,999.99 per year, depending on the membership tier.
Coinbase Advanced uses maker-taker pricing instead of flat commissions. Rates range from 0.00% to 1.20%, and the exact cost depends on trade volume and the coin being traded.
Coinbase customers can also generate rewards by staking certain cryptocurrencies or earning returns on eligible balances. For example, Coinbase currently advertises up to 13.39% APY on Cosmos staking.

Extra Features

Coin Releases: Coinbase continues to expand its selection by adding newly supported cryptocurrencies to the platform.
Fractional Coins: Cryptocurrency can be purchased in fractional amounts at Coinbase. Minimum purchase amounts can depend on the cryptocurrency and payment method, while standard Coinbase limit orders currently have a $5 minimum. On Base, the minimum is $5.
Individual Retirement Accounts: Coinbase does not provide IRAs directly. Coinbase Custody is among the institutional digital-asset storage providers used for cryptocurrency held through iTrustCapital’s IRA platform.
Our Recommendations
Beginning Investors: Coinbase’s standard website and mobile app are good places for new cryptocurrency investors to begin because their primary trading tools are relatively straightforward.
Small Accounts: Higher-volume traders receive more favorable pricing at Coinbase, while Coinbase One’s fixed subscription charge may not make financial sense for every small account. Nevertheless, Coinbase can still work well for investors with modest balances because there are no general account-maintenance fees or minimum account-balance requirements.
Frequent Trading: Coinbase Advanced is a capable platform for active and more experienced crypto traders, and frequent traders may also benefit from considering a Coinbase One membership.
Long-Term Investing & Retirement Planning: Coinbase still has relatively limited resources for long-term and retirement investing.
Webull provides more traditional investment choices and also offers trading in more than 70 cryptocurrencies.
Stock and ETF Trading: Coinbase now provides stock and ETF trading through Coinbase Capital Markets to eligible customers in the United States.
Kraken also provides stock and ETF trading to eligible U.S. customers, while Robinhood customers in Europe can trade stock tokens.
Coinbase Review Judgment
Coinbase combines a broad assortment of cryptocurrency products and trading tools with generally competitive pricing. Eligible U.S. customers can now also use Coinbase for stock and ETF trading through Coinbase Capital Markets.
