E*TRADE Crypto Trading Account Review, Fees, & Features in 2026

Cryptocurrencies at E*TRADE

Key Takeaways:

• E*TRADE customers can now buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana are available through a crypto account connected to an eligible individual E*TRADE brokerage account.

• E*TRADE crypto trades carry a 0.50% commission.

Investors who already use E*TRADE for stocks and futures can now include cryptocurrencies in their trading activity. The brokerage provides direct access to three digital currencies. Here is how the service works:

Overview of Cryptocurrencies at E*TRADE

E*TRADE offers cryptocurrency trading through its partnership with Zero Hash LLC, which operates under the zerohash name. Customers can directly trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The platform does not currently provide direct trading in any additional cryptocurrencies.

Digital-asset holdings are maintained in a distinct, non-brokerage account supplied by zerohash. Morgan Stanley does not directly execute the cryptocurrency transactions or hold the digital assets in custody. Cryptocurrency maintained at zerohash is not considered a bank deposit and receives no protection from SIPC or the FDIC.

Zero Hash LLC conducts business under NMLS ID #1699379 and follows the applicable legal and regulatory requirements in every jurisdiction where its services are available.

Opening an E*TRADE Crypto Account

Direct cryptocurrency assets are not maintained within an E*TRADE brokerage or futures account. Customers instead establish a separate zerohash crypto account and connect it to an eligible individual E*TRADE brokerage account.

To access the cryptocurrency service, a U.S.-based customer must have an eligible individual E*TRADE brokerage account. Having only a Morgan Stanley account is not sufficient. Morgan Stanley customers need to open an individual E*TRADE brokerage account and connect it to a separate crypto account at zerohash.

Existing customers with an eligible individual brokerage account can sign in at etrade.com and open the Profile section. From there, select Account Preferences followed by Additional Trading Features. Use the Crypto powered by zerohash link and select the brokerage account that will be linked.

Investors without an eligible brokerage account can submit applications for an individual E*TRADE brokerage account and the connected zerohash crypto account through the same opening process.

Each customer can currently open only one crypto account.

Funding a Crypto Account at E*TRADE

Cash purchasing power for the crypto account comes from the linked brokerage account. Customers do not need to transfer a separate cash balance directly into their zerohash account.

After a cryptocurrency purchase or sale is completed, the required cash automatically moves between the linked E*TRADE brokerage account and the zerohash crypto account for settlement.

To deposit funds, sign in to E*TRADE, go to the Pay & Transfer section, and choose Transfer Money. Cryptocurrency orders can be submitted after enough available cash reaches the connected brokerage account.

Researching Cryptocurrencies at E*TRADE

After the crypto account has been approved and the linked brokerage account contains enough cash, investors can review information about the three supported currencies:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Solana (SOL)

On the E*TRADE website, customers can open Trading and choose Crypto. This section combines the crypto order ticket with account balances, existing positions, pending orders, market prices, charts, price movements, and volume information.

Cryptocurrency research and quotes are also accessible through the standard E*TRADE mobile app. Investors can look up an individual digital currency or enter the Crypto area through the Markets section.

Information available in the mobile application includes:

  • Latest market price
  • Changes in price
  • Interactive pricing chart
  • Market volume
  • 52-week high and low
  • Available coin supply
  • Currency background and white papers

Customers can also monitor their crypto positions together with their other accounts by using Complete View on etrade.com or opening the Accounts area of the mobile application.

Placing a Crypto Trade at E*TRADE

Investors can submit cryptocurrency orders through etrade.com or the regular E*TRADE mobile application. Crypto trading operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

On the website, go to Trading and choose Crypto. Select the BTC/USD, ETH/USD, or SOL/USD pair, followed by Buy or Sell.

In the mobile application, select Trade, choose Crypto from the Security Type list, and then select the appropriate currency pair.

E*TRADE supports two price types for direct cryptocurrency orders:

  • Market orders
  • Limit orders

Customers can select either Good for Day or Good Until Date as the order duration. When offered, a Good Until Date order may remain active for up to 60 days.

An order can be specified in U.S. dollars or units of cryptocurrency. Customers may enter whole or fractional coin quantities with as many as eight decimal places, where supported.

Direct cryptocurrency trading is not yet supported on Power E*TRADE. E*TRADE identifies availability on the Power E*TRADE platforms as coming soon.

Crypto Tax Forms at E*TRADE

Zerohash furnishes Form 1099-DA for reportable digital-asset transactions. Customers can retrieve the document through E*TRADE’s Tax Center.

Form 1099-DA contains information about proceeds from cryptocurrency sales and other reportable digital-asset dispositions. Investors are still responsible for accurately reporting all taxable crypto income, gains, and losses on their federal income-tax returns.

Crypto Fees and Minimums at E*TRADE

E*TRADE crypto orders are charged a commission of 0.50% of each trade’s notional value. Zerohash collects the commission and pays a portion of it to E*TRADE.

E*TRADE does not add a separate spread fee or price markup.

The minimum crypto order is $10, and the maximum permitted order is $500,000.

The order ticket accepts either a U.S.-dollar value or a quantity of cryptocurrency. When supported, coin quantities can include fractions extending to eight decimal places.
