Are you interested in cryptocurrencies? If so, a self-directed account at moomoo may be what you seek. Here’s the lowdown:
Overview of Cryptocurrencies at Moomoo
Moomoo has expanded its original product lineup of just one asset class to include cryptocurrencies. The broker’s crypto offering now includes more than 50 coins, so traders can capture both the big and small names out there. Here are some examples we found:
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ripple (XRP)
- Lido DAO (LDO)
- The Graph (GRT)
- Immutable X (IMX)
- And more...
To actually be able to buy and sell these coins, a discrete crypto account is required. Don’t worry, though, it’s really easy to open. Once up and running, it will stand next to your securities account with a single login.
And when we say “buy and sell these coins,” we do mean in that order; cryptocurrencies cannot be shorted at moomoo.
Cryptocurrencies with moomoo are currently available in some countries, but not all. American-based customers of moomoo can trade digital currencies.
Moomoo’s Crypto Pricing
If you do decide to trade cryptocurrencies at moomoo, you’ll have to pay 0.49% of principal value on each trade, buy or sell. So a round-trip transaction will be around 1%.
Although this de facto commission may sound disappointing in today’s world of zero-commission trading, it’s actually lower than what a lot of other zero-commission brokers are charging these days on crypto trades.
Also, moomoo charges no recurring fees on crypto accounts; there are no annual or inactivity charges. A crypto account at moomoo has no account minimum, either. A crypto account can be opened and maintained with any balance or no balance at all, another great policy.
Opening a Moomoo Crypto Account
On moomoo’s mobile app, a crypto account can be opened. After logging into the app, tap on the Discover tab in the bottom menu. On the Discover page, scroll down to find the button to open an account. Tap on this, and you’ll get a list of eligible accounts to open; crypto should be in there.
Typically, if you haven’t yet opened a crypto account, the app will give you some advertisements elsewhere to open the account. Tap on the button to get started; much of your information will already be populated. Simply go through the pages and make sure everything looks okay. Submit the application, which should be approved within minutes.
Note well: a crypto account cannot be opened on moomoo’s website or desktop program. Therefore, you have to open the account through the mobile app.

Crypto Education at Moomoo
Once your crypto account is open, you may want to go through some of moomoo’s crypto education before diving in with actual trades; this is especially true for beginners.
A good place to find crypto resources is to head to the moomoo website and dive into the Resources tab; it appears at the top of the site. In here, you’ll find lots of investment education, including information on crypto trading.

Researching Cryptocurrencies at Moomoo
Once you have the basics down, it’s time to research individual coins. Once again, moomoo comes through with some helpful resources. Information on coins can be found on both the mobile app and the desktop platform; the app has the lion’s share of details.
Obviously, a good place to begin is with the mobile app. Tap on the Markets icon in the bottom menu. Next, scroll to the Crypto tab at the top. The Crypto page has all sorts of information that crypto traders will definitely want to pay attention to. There are Hot Topics, Investment Themes, a heatmap, a market overview, and a list of tradable coins.
The list of tradable coins can be sorted by a range of issues. Examples include:
- Turnover
- Market cap
- Top gainers
- Top losers
The heat map can be toggled between coins and crypto stocks, just in case you’re interested in the securities space, too.
The Hot Topics section displays news articles from the crypto world. Tap on the Subscribe button to sign up for notifications of new releases. Articles are from CoinDesk.
Tap on a coin’s ticker symbol or name anywhere on the app to pull up a profile. Here, there is a chart, news articles, and discussions from other moomoo users.
Coins can be added to a watchlist. Tap on the Watchlist icon at the bottom to see your complete list. You can also search for coins using the magnifying glass at the top. Alternatively, go back to the Markets tab to find some possible assets. Wherever you’re at on the app, simply tap on a coin to get its profile.
Making a Deposit into a Moomoo Crypto Account
Once you have found a coin you’re interested in, it’s time to get down to business. To make a purchase, you will need to first fund the crypto account.
At moomoo, it is not possible to deposit cash into a crypto account directly from a bank account. Instead, you have to transfer fiat into a moomoo securities account, allow the cash to settle, and then move the money into the crypto account.
Log into the app and tap on the Accounts tab in the main menu. On the Accounts page, tap on the crypto account. On the next page, tap on the Transfers tab at the top. On the Transfers page, tap on Cash Transfer and follow the prompts.
Placing a Crypto Trade at Moomoo
When you’re ready to make a purchase, log into the app. The other platforms at moomoo can’t be used for crypto trading. Here, there is an orange Trade button. Tap on this to pull up the order ticket; it has two order types for cryptocurrencies: market and limit. The quantity can be specified in dollars or coins.
