Overview of Cryptocurrencies at Robinhood
Robinhood was founded in 2013 and first became known for stock and exchange-traded fund trading. Since then, it has added more asset classes; today, it also supports cryptocurrency trading.
Currently, Robinhood offers trading in 71 digital currencies. Not every coin can be traded on every Robinhood platform, which we’ll cover below. The brokerage firm also shows real-time data for many other cryptocurrencies that are not available for trading.
Some of the 71 tradable coins are not available for trading in New York or Texas. Although these state-level limits apply in some cases, Robinhood’s crypto service is available in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
A Robinhood Crypto account is self-directed and operates on a custodial basis, which means Robinhood controls the private keys tied to the coins in the account. The firm also provides a wallet for users who want a self-custody option.

Opening a Crypto Account at Robinhood
Cryptocurrencies are not securities, event contracts, or futures contracts. Because of this, they are held in a separate crypto account. To open this account, log into the Robinhood website and search for a coin by name or ticker symbol, such as Bitcoin or BTC.
On the crypto profile page, a trade ticket appears in the top-right corner. Try to place a trade, and Robinhood will show a prompt to enable crypto trading. Follow the steps to open the crypto account and prepare it for trading. Note that it may take up to 24 hours for Robinhood to process the account request.

Fees and Minimums
Robinhood charges no commissions on crypto trades that use market-maker routing in a Robinhood Crypto account. This is the default setup for standard crypto trades. With this routing method, Robinhood sends orders to market makers, which pay the broker volume rebates.
Robinhood also offers another pricing method for crypto traders: smart-exchange routing. With this setup, Robinhood sends orders to certain partner exchanges, which do not pay the broker volume rebates. Because of this, Robinhood charges fees on these orders. The schedule is as follows:

Only orders executed through smart-exchange routing count toward the volume tiers above. Robinhood notes that all-in costs may be higher or lower with smart-exchange routing than with market-maker routing. The minimum fee on smart-exchange orders is $0.01.
Robinhood does not add fees for crypto transfers, although network fees or gas fees may still apply.
Cryptocurrencies at Robinhood can be traded in fractional-coin amounts. The minimum order size is $0.01 for market-maker routing and $0.03 for smart-exchange routing.
Brokerage Software for Cryptocurrencies at Robinhood
For custodial crypto trading, Robinhood offers three main platforms: the website, Legend, and the mobile app. Legend is a browser-based trading platform available through Robinhood’s site. Although these three tools may seem similar at first, crypto traders should understand the differences before placing orders.
Legend, for example, uses only smart-exchange routing for crypto orders. On web classic, only market-maker routing is available. The mobile app can support either routing method for certain coins. When you select the Trade button in the app to buy a coin, you can switch to smart exchange routing if the coin and location are eligible.
Some coins can be traded on certain Robinhood platforms but not on others. For example, Ethereum Classic, with ticker symbol ETC, can be viewed on Legend but cannot be traded on it. Canton Coin (CC) can be traded in the app and on web classic with market-maker routing, but it is not available through smart-exchange routing or on Legend. Some coins also cannot be charted on Legend.
Robinhood Wallet
Robinhood has another software platform for crypto investors: a wallet. This mobile app is a self-custody platform, which means the trader, rather than Robinhood, is responsible for the private keys.
The mobile app, which works on both Android and Apple phones, can be used to send and receive thousands of cryptocurrencies. They can be swapped across many networks. Users can also interact with NFTs and dApps. Web3 marketplaces can be accessed through the app as well. It’s possible to transfer funds between the wallet and a crypto brokerage account. Because the wallet is self-custody, it’s important to back it up; the app provides a reminder to do this.
Each coin on Robinhood Wallet has a QR code for simple deposits. Sending a coin out of the wallet is also straightforward.
Researching Cryptocurrencies on Robinhood
A moderate amount of information on digital currencies is available through both the wallet and Robinhood’s brokerage platforms. Up to 5 years of price data can be shown on a graph, although some coins have less trading history. On Legend, but not on Robinhood’s other platforms, charts include technical studies.
Coin profiles also show key statistics. Here are some examples:

How to Place a Crypto Trade at Robinhood
On the wallet, tap the search icon at the bottom of the screen; it looks like a magnifying glass. You’ll see links to several popular coins. At the bottom of the search page, there is a search bar; enter the coin’s name or ticker symbol.
Once you reach the coin’s profile, there is a Buy button at the bottom. It’s not possible to short cryptocurrencies at Robinhood. On the trade ticket, enter the dollar amount you want to spend. At the top, it’s possible to set up a purchase using a cryptocurrency.
For a brokerage trade, the process is similar. Several order types are available on the brokerage side, including limit, stop, stop limit, and recurring orders. On Legend, there is a useful price ladder; look for it under the widget button at the top. A chart has a Buy button at the top of the charting window, and the order ticket shows the estimated fee for a smart-routed order.
