Crypto Wallet at Schwab
Synopsis:
• Charles Schwab does not support direct cryptocurrency trading.
• Schwab does not provide a crypto wallet.
• Robinhood offers crypto trading accounts and a crypto wallet, making it a practical alternative.
Looking for a crypto wallet? If that’s the goal, Schwab isn’t a match, but Robinhood may be. Here are the details:
Overview of Crypto Wallets at Schwab and Robinhood
You cannot buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly through Charles Schwab. In addition, the firm does not offer a crypto wallet. If you need either feature, Robinhood is worth a look because it offers both at a relatively low cost under its current policies.
Robinhood’s Crypto Wallet
Robinhood offers a self-custody (non-custodial) wallet that allows users to send, receive, and store cryptocurrencies across multiple networks. Because it is a non-custodial wallet, the user controls the private keys. This provides more independence, but it also means the user has more responsibility than with a custodial account.
If you prefer a crypto brokerage account that uses custody, Robinhood also provides that option. It is possible to have both a Robinhood Wallet and a Robinhood crypto brokerage account for managing digital assets.
Robinhood’s wallet supports the following networks:
- Ethereum
- Bitcoin
- Solana
- Dogecoin
- Arbitrum
- Polygon
- Optimism
- Base
Creating a Robinhood Wallet
Setting up a wallet at Robinhood is straightforward. Go to the app store on an Android or Apple device and download the Robinhood Wallet app (this is separate from the standard Robinhood investing app). After installing it, tap the option to create a new wallet and follow the on-screen prompts; you will likely be asked to set up a custom PIN.
Robinhood Crypto
Lowest crypto costs on average in the US: get up to 3.5% more crypto on Robinhood.
Funding the Wallet
After your Robinhood wallet is created, you can fund it so you can store cryptocurrencies and purchase more. You can also import an existing wallet from another provider. The external wallet must be on one of the networks listed above.
You can transfer crypto from a Robinhood crypto brokerage account into the wallet. To do that, tap the Deposit button in the wallet, select the cryptocurrency you want to move, and then choose the option to transfer from your brokerage account on the next screen.
Robinhood’s wallet can also be used to swap tokens. Look for the swap button in the app, tap it, and then choose the two coins you want to exchange.
Fees and Minimums
Robinhood has no minimum requirement to open a wallet, and it can be kept open with a $0.00 balance. Some transactions do have fees. For example, token swaps cost 0.80% for same-chain swaps or 0.73% for cross-chain swaps. Some swaps may also include provider fees.
Withdrawing crypto from the wallet will also involve network fees. These fees are paid to the blockchain, not to Robinhood.
