Interactive Brokers Recurring Investing Important Facts
• IBKR provides a plan for automatic investments in stocks and ETFs.
• There may be commissions on recurring trades.
• You can do dollar-cost averaging with IBKR’s Recurring Investments.
If you often place orders for the same security at Interactive Brokers, you might consider setting up an Automatic Investment Plan (AIP), which will carry out your future purchases automatically.
Overview of IBKR’s Automatic Investment Plan
Interactive Brokers refers to its Automatic Investment Plan as Recurring Investments. The brokerage lets you schedule recurring buys (but not sells) of stocks and ETFs listed on American and European markets. Other asset types, such as mutual funds, are not available for this program.
Not every regional division of IKBR includes this helpful feature. Only accounts opened in Hong Kong, the U.S., the U.K., and Singapore can use it.
Setting up Recurring Investments
To create a recurring investment for a security, log in to the IBKR website and select the Trade tab in the main menu. In the drop-down menu that appears, choose Recurring Investments.
On the next page, you'll find a blue button to create a recurring buy. Click it to open the needed order form. Provide the required information, such as the amount (in whole dollars or the account's currency), the start date, an optional end date, and the frequency. IBKR provides multiple schedules, including:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Bi-weekly
- Monthly
- Quarterly
- Semi-annually
- Annually
The auto-invest plan requires a minimum purchase of 10 in any currency except Swedish Krona, which has a 100 minimum. Either way, placing an order in whole currency amounts will result in fractional shares.
After you fill out the required fields on the AIP trade ticket, review your order. If everything is correct, submit it. Once a recurring order is submitted, you can change or cancel it at any point by returning to the Recurring Investments page.
To set up a recurring investment in a European stock, a U.S. account must first enable global trading permission. This can be done in the Trading Permissions section, located on the Settings page (check under the account icon at the top-right of the site).

Trade Execution
AIP orders go through in the morning as market orders. A recurring buy is only sent to the relevant exchange if the account has enough cash to cover the trade amount plus any commission. If the account does not have enough funds, the order won’t go through. If the account holds the needed amount in another currency, IBKR will handle the currency exchange to finalize the trade.
IBKR Dollar-Cost Averaging
Since these recurring buys use a fixed dollar amount, they allow for dollar-cost averaging. This approach suggests investing a set amount of money in securities on a routine schedule. When prices drop, you get more shares with the same amount. Over time, the price might climb, and consistently adding funds helps build a holding over time.
Cost of Recurring Investments at IBKR
A $0.005 commission per share applies to trades placed through IBKR's Automatic Investment Plan.
