IBKR Recurring Investing (AIP/SIP) in 2026
|
IBKR Recurring Investing Important Facts
• IBKR offers an Automatic Investment Plan for stocks and ETFs.
• Commissions could be charged on systematic trades.
• Dollar-cost averaging is possible with Recurring Investments at IBKR.
If you find yourself regularly placing trades for the same security at Interactive Brokers, you may want to set up an Automatic Investment Plan (AIP) so that future purchases are executed automatically.
Overview of IBKR’s Automatic Investment Plan
The Automatic Investment Plan at Interactive Brokers is called Recurring Investments. The brokerage firm permits systematic purchases (but not sales) of stocks and ETFs that trade on the American and European exchanges. Other asset classes, including mutual funds, are off limits for this program.
Not all national branches of IKBR offer this useful feature. Accounts opened in Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore are eligible.
Setting up Recurring Investments
To establish a recurring investment on a security, log into the IBKR website and click on the Trade tab that sits in the main menu. In the drop-down window that appears, find the link for Recurring Investments.
On the next page, you’ll see a blue button to set up a recurring purchase. Click on this and you’ll get the necessary order form. Fill in the requested details, including the amount, which will be in whole dollars (or whatever currency the account is using), the start date, the end date if desired, and the frequency. IBKR offers several frequencies, including:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Bi-weekly
- Monthly
- Quarterly
- Semi-annually
- Annually
The minimum purchase amount under the auto-investing program is 10 for all currencies except Swedish Krona, which is 100. In either case, fractional shares will obviously be created from the whole-currency order.
Once the requested details on the AIP trade ticket have been filled in, review the order. If everything looks okay, submit the order. After a recurring order has been submitted, it can be edited or canceled at any time (just go back to the Recurring Investments page).
To create a recurring investment for a European stock, a U.S.-based account must first add the necessary permission for global trading. This can be accomplished on the Trading Permissions hub, which will be found on the Settings page (look under the account icon in the upper-right corner of the site).

Trade Execution
AIP orders are submitted in the morning as market orders. A recurring purchase will only be submitted to the appropriate exchange if the account has sufficient cash to cover the cost of the trade plus the commission, if any. If the account doesn’t have the necessary cash available for trading, the order won’t be submitted. If the account does have the necessary amount in a different currency, IBKR will make the forex conversion to complete the trade.
IBKR Dollar-Cost Averaging
Because systematic purchases use a whole-dollar amount, they present an opportunity to engage in dollar-cost averaging. This is an investment theory that advocates using a whole-dollar amount to purchase securities on a regular basis. When prices are low, more shares are accumulated because the same dollar amount is used. Over time, the price is expected to rise, and as more investments are made, a nest egg is built.
Cost of Recurring Investments at IBKR
A $0.005 per share commission is applied for trades in IBKR’s Automatic Investment Plan.
