Can I Buy Penny Stocks on Ally Invest?
Yes, Ally Invest lets its customers buy and sell OTC and penny stocks.
More than 51,000 stocks are offered at Ally Invest. Unfortunately, the broker’s search tool cannot filter for over‐the‐counter securities specifically. However, penny stocks are available; you just have to look through the results if you are interested.
Ally Invest Penny Stock Fees
Ally Invest OTC/penny stock fee | $0 on stocks $2.00 and higher
$4.95 + $0.01 per share on stocks priced below $2.00 |
Ally Invest large order surcharge | $0 |
Ally Invest ECN surcharge | $0 |
Ally Invest requires a minimum trade amount of $100 for all OTC securities.
The highest penny stock fee at Ally Invest is 5% of the trade value.
This means that an order of 5,000 shares of a stock priced under $2.00 on Pink Sheets/OTCBB/penny stock will cost you $55 or 5% of the trade value (whichever is lower). We like Ally Invest, but this fee is very high, so we do not recommend Ally Invest for penny stocks.
As an alternative, Firstrade charges $0 commission on penny stocks, but only stocks priced above 10 cents can be traded. Firstrade offers over 15,000 OTC stocks.

OTC Stocks at Ally Invest
The broker offers several thousand stocks that trade for less than a dollar. One example is Jaguar Mining, Inc. Its ticker is JAGGF, and it is currently trading at 45¢. The stock averages 34,000 shares traded per day, which is high for an OTC stock, and its market cap is just over $50 million. Although the Ally Invest website does not show any news for the company, there is some commentary.
Another OTC stock available at Ally Invest is Zoned Properties, Inc. Its recent trade price is $1.54 under the ticker ZDPY. It averages 21,000 shares traded daily. It does not pay a dividend, and the financial information on Ally Invest’s website is incomplete. There are no option contracts available for this stock at the moment.
How To Buy Penny Stocks on Ally Invest
When you find a stock that looks too good to pass up, it’s time to make a trade. Buying a penny stock at Ally Invest is no different from buying any regular stock. Orders can be placed through the broker’s website, desktop platform, or mobile app.
Although placing an order for an OTC security is as simple as with regular stocks, the cost is not. Ally Invest adds a surcharge to any stock priced below $2.
Comparison
Ally Invest’s inability to filter by exchange makes it harder to find OTC stocks. Other brokers offer this feature in their search tools. For example, Charles Schwab does provide this option.
