Is Stash FDIC Insured and SIPC Protected?
One of the responsibilities of a careful investor is making sure that money and investments held with a brokerage firm have appropriate protections. This may feel less concerning with older, well-established brokers, but newer investing platforms can deserve closer scrutiny. This article explains the insurance and account protections available to Stash customers.
Is My Money Protected with Stash?
Cash and investments held through Stash can qualify for two primary forms of protection, FDIC insurance and SIPC protection, although the details depend on where the assets are held. Investments shown in your Stash account are held by a third-party broker-dealer and custodian — Apex Clearing Corporation.
This arrangement may seem unusual if you are unfamiliar with the brokerage
industry, but using a separate clearing firm and custodian is common among brokerage companies.
Apex Clearing Corporation supports the SIPC protection and FDIC-insured sweep arrangement available for eligible assets held through Stash.
SIPC Insurance with Stash
Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) protection covers eligible securities and cash up to a total of $500,000, including up to $250,000 for cash claims. SIPC helps protect customers when a SIPC-member brokerage firm fails and customer assets are missing. With Stash, investments are held by Apex Clearing Corporation, which is an SIPC member.
Stash investment accounts are eligible for SIPC protection, including taxable brokerage accounts, IRAs, custodial accounts, and Smart Portfolios. Depending on the accounts you own and the capacities in which they are registered, you may qualify for separate SIPC protection. For example, an individual taxable brokerage account and an IRA are separate capacities and can each qualify for up to $500,000 of SIPC protection, creating a combined maximum of $1,000,000.
FDIC Insurance with Stash Investment Accounts
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance protects qualifying deposits held at FDIC-insured banks. Stash automatically enrolls eligible uninvested brokerage cash in the Apex FDIC-insured Sweep Program. Apex then transfers this cash to participating FDIC-insured banks.
Deposits placed through the Sweep Program are eligible for up to $250,000 of FDIC insurance per customer at each participating FDIC-insured bank. After the cash is deposited at a participating bank through the Sweep Program, it is no longer covered by SIPC.
FDIC Insurance with Stash Bank Accounts
Stash also provides banking services in addition to its investment products. Stash itself is not a bank — banking services are provided by Stride Bank, N.A., Member FDIC. Eligible deposits in a Stash bank account receive FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.
