Is Public App Open On Weekends?

You can log in and use Public app on weekends. However, stock market is closed on a weekend, so any changes to investments you make will take effect on the next business day.

The one exception is crypto trading. It is available 24/7.

Outline

Although Public and Merrill Edge both charge $0 for stock and ETF trades, there are many differences between these two firms. Before you pick one place over the other, make sure you’re aware of these differences:

Category #1: Securities Offered

Public has a fairly small range of tradable securities:

  • 1. ETFs
  • 2. Closed-end funds
  • 3. Equities
  • 4. Cryptocurrencies

At Merrill Edge, investors get a somewhat larger selection:

  • 1. Option contracts
  • 2. Exchange-traded funds
  • 3. Closed-end funds
  • 4. Stocks
  • 5. Mutual funds
  • 6. Bonds and bond equivalents

Merrill Edge clients, but not Public customers, can buy and sell OTC stocks as well.

Category #2: Style of Investing

At Public, traders can open individual brokerage accounts (only). Rather surprisingly, that’s all the company offers right now. There are no joint accounts, and margin isn’t available, either.

Merrill Edge customers can choose from individual and joint accounts, trusts, Health Savings Accounts, estate accounts, and managed accounts. The latter option includes both robo and human advisors. Margin is available as well.

Because Merrill Edge is owned by Bank of America, there are several cash management options available to Merrill customers.

Category #3: Investment Education

Merrill Edge customers have access to a large learning center on the broker’s website. Called Investor Education, this section can be found in the top menu. Selections include:

  • Videos & Webinars
  • Article Library
  • Tools & Calculators
  • Morningstar Classroom
  • Investment Education
  • Stocks Education
  • ETF Education
  • Mutual Funds Education
  • Fixed Income Education
  • Annuities Education

Public’s website has a small selection of articles on various topics, such as:

  • How to buy stocks online
  • What are the advantages of ETFs?
  • Long Term Investments – Power of Compounding
  • Basics of Value Investing and Comparison of Investment Strategies

Merrill Edge has several security screeners; but Public has none. Moreover, Merrill’s asset profiles have more information than Public’s.

Winner: Merrill Edge

Category #4: Desktop Software

Merrill Edge customers can choose between a website and a desktop platform named MarketPro. Both resources offer trade tickets with multiple features. MarketPro has the most advanced features, including interactive charting, Level II data, and options trading. Somewhat surprisingly, the software works on Macs.

Even more surprisingly, Public has no computer trading software at all. Its website offers no login capability.

Winner: Merrill Edge

Category #5: Mobile Apps

Without desktop trading functionality, Public customers are relegated to mobile trading. The broker’s app comes with very simple charting. There is only one graph mode (line), and a chart cannot be rotated horizontally. Since this is the only graphing option Public customers have, there’s not much to work with here.

Public.com Social Trading

The order ticket on Public’s software offers market, limit, and stop orders. News articles are shown with thumbnails, and we like the ability to message other traders and comment on trades.

Merrill Edge’s app offers bill pay, mobile check deposit, and a free credit score, none of which are available on Public’s app. Furthermore, charting can be performed in horizontal mode; and there are many tools, including technical studies, multiple graph styles, and comparisons. A graph can also be saved as a template.

Merrill Edge app

The order ticket on Merrill’s app has trailing orders and other features not found on the Public platform.

Winner: Merrill Edge

Category #6: Other Services

Dividend Reinvestment Program: A DRIP system is free at either broker-dealer.

IRAs: Several retirement accounts can be opened at Merrill Edge, but not at Public.

Fractional-Share Trading: Public traders can buy and sell fractional shares of securities. Merrill Edge doesn’t offer this great service, at least not yet.

Winner: Draw

Our Recommendations

Stock and ETF Trading: Merrill Edge customers have access to a robust desktop platform free of charge. Easy choice.

Beginners: Merrill also offers 24/7 customer support, a thorough learning center, and an online chat feature that new traders might need. We pick Merrill again.

Long-Term Investors and Retirement Savers: With IRAs, financial advice, and target-date mutual funds, Merrill Edge is the only option.

Small Accounts: We can defend either firm.

Public vs Merrill Edge Summary

Merrill Edge trounced Public. We do like Public’s social-networking features and its whole-dollar investing, however.
