Extended-Hours Trading at Public App: Key Takeaways
• Traders at Public can submit orders during the broker’s pre-market and post-market trading sessions.
• A Premium membership at Public is required to gain access to extended hours.
• Without a Premium subscription, Robinhood is an alternative.
Overview of Extended Hours at Public.com
Public.com offers trading in securities before the opening bell and after the closing bell. There are some strings attached, though.
Pre-Market and Post-Market at Public
For an hour and a half before the opening bell and for four hours after the closing bell, Public.com clients can buy and sell securities. These extended-hours periods are in addition to the regular session, which means Public investors can trade for a total of 12 hours (8:00 am, EST, until 8:00 pm).
Public.com 24 Hour Trading
Unlike Robinhood, Public.com does not offer 24 hour trading at this time.
Cost of Extended-Hours Trading
The real downside of Public’s extended-hours securities trading is the cost. The brokerage firm requires a Premium subscription to trade during these special times; the cost is $10 per month. Large accounts, however, do get Premium at no cost. Large is defined by Public as $20,000 or more in assets.
On the upside, Premium comes with a lot of other perks, like VIP account management, real-time price alerts, detailed performance metrics, exclusive audio content, and more.
At Public, there are no commissions on trades of securities during any period.
Cryptos at Public
Although Public itself does not offer trading in cryptocurrencies, it has a partnership with Bakkt Crypto that helps its customers trade digital currencies. These assets do, of course, trade 24/7. Crypto orders have fees that vary by trade principal.
Robinhood as a Substitute
Public customers who don’t have $20,000 or don’t want to pay $10 per month can head to Robinhood, where
no such costs and minimums apply to extended-hours trading in securities. Robinhood
offers post-market and pre-market trading for all customers with no surcharges, fees, account minimums, or commissions. And Robinhood has a longer early-morning session (7:00 am, EST, until market open).
Another reason why Robinhood may be a better choice than Public is the broker’s 24-hour market. This is
a great service that provides around-the-clock trading in hundreds of stocks and ETFs five days a week.
This 24-hour service starts on Sunday at 8 o’clock in the evening and ends on Friday at the same time. Here are some examples of securities that can be traded overnight:
- Apple Inc (AAPL)
- iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT)
- Tesla (TSLA)
- GameStop (GME)
- ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ (SQQQ)
- Arm Holdings (ARM)
- SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY)
Securities eligible for 24-hour trading have three choices on Robinhood’s order ticket for duration:
- Regular session
- 24-hour market
- Extended hours (7 am to 8 pm)
Last, but certainly not least, is Robinhood’s cryptocurrency service, which offers trading in digital coins 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Robinhood also offers more coins than Bakkt.
