Charles Schwab Joint Tenants (WROS) Account For 2026

JTWROS Accounts at Charles Schwab

Charles Schwab offers many different account types that you can open without difficulty. One of these is the Joint Tenants with Rights of Survivorship (JTWROS) account.

Schwab’s JTWROS Account

A JTWROS account at Schwab is basically a joint account where the remaining owner(s) get the assets when one owner passes away. Because it’s joint, there are at least two owners. The “rights of survivorship” part means that if one owner dies, their share goes straight to the other owners. It won’t transfer to the deceased owner’s estate or heirs like it would with a tenancy in common.

The JTWROS arrangement skips probate, which is a big advantage for estate planning. This account option isn’t offered in Puerto Rico or Louisiana.

Opening a JTWROS Account at Schwab

Either an investment or a bank account can be opened as JTWROS at Schwab. The investment account can be set up as self-directed or advisory-based, which could be a robo or full-service arrangement.

To begin, look for the button at the top of the website to open an account. On the account-opening page, you’ll see three options: brokerage, automated investing, or banking. A checking account can’t be opened alone; it has to be paired with a self-directed brokerage account. In that setup, both accounts must match in type (like individual or joint).

Click on the option you need (brokerage, robo, or brokerage-checking) and follow the instructions. You’ll have to pick one of three joint account choices (tenants in common, JTWROS, or community property). Choose JTWROS here.

If your JTWROS account is based in the U.S., Schwab needs a residential address in the United States or the U.S. Virgin Islands. You’ll also need a Social Security Number. Every account holder must meet these requirements.

Schwab has a global service that lets many foreign nationals open self-directed brokerage accounts. Certain countries allow the JTWROS setup, like Switzerland.

You can also open a joint account on Schwab’s mobile app. In the app’s top-left corner, tap the account icon (the head and shoulders image), then choose the link to open an account in the drop-down menu.

Changing Account Ownership

At Schwab, you can convert an individual account into a JTWROS account or add another owner to an existing joint account. This paper form is necessary. After the switch, the account number stays the same.

It’s a fillable form, so you can complete it on a computer. After you fill it out, print it, sign it, and send it to Schwab by fax, mail, the document upload tool (once you’re logged in), or take it to a local branch.

Schwab JTWROS Pricing

Self-directed joint accounts at Schwab have no required deposit and no ongoing fees. One-time costs are uncommon. For instance, a full outgoing ACAT transfer is $50. Online trades of stocks and ETFs on major exchanges cost $0 in commissions.

If a joint account is set up as a managed account, there will be annual management fees. They vary based on the advisory package.

Joint Account Investment Products

Joint accounts in self-directed mode can trade many types of investments. They have the same securities list as other accounts, plus futures and foreign stocks.

Joint accounts in an advisory format usually have fewer investment choices. Robo accounts, for example, only invest in a small group of ETFs.

Joint Account Education

A major benefit of a JTWROS at Schwab is the wide range of educational tools the firm provides. You can find these resources on both the website and main app. They may not all mention JTWROS accounts specifically, but many will be relevant. We found titles such as:

- Life Expectancy in Retirement
- 3 Ways to Pass Down a Home
- How to Get the Most from Employee Benefits Plan
- Estate Planning at Any Age: Getting an Early Start
- Retirement Savings Tips
- How to Protect Your Estate from an Heir's Divorce
