New Robinhood Account Application
Main Points:
• You can open a Robinhood account on the broker’s website or mobile app.
• Some accounts may need a brokerage account first.
• Certain requirements must be met to open a Robinhood account.
If you’re planning to open a new brokerage account at Robinhood, read this first:
Robinhood Account Application Requirements
To open a Robinhood account, you must meet these requirements:
- Have a Social Security Number (SSN); an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is not accepted
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have a valid U.S. visa (not all visas qualify)
- Have a U.S. residential address (this includes Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, the 50 states, and the Virgin Islands; U.S. soldiers stationed abroad are exempt)
An exception applies to Europeans who want crypto accounts. Robinhood offers a crypto program in Europe that allows residents in many countries to open crypto accounts (securities accounts are not yet available).
Robinhood Brokerage Application
To open an individual or joint brokerage account at Robinhood for trading,
go to the Robinhood website and click the yellow-green button to sign up. You may also see a “Start with more” button. Both options begin the application.
Complete the pages and enter the required details. You’ll start with an email and a mobile number. Robinhood will send a text message that you must verify.
Later, you must provide your SSN, date of birth, and country of citizenship. U.S. citizenship is not required, but a U.S. address must be provided.
You can also apply with Robinhood’s mobile app. Download the app on Android or Apple and look for the black button to sign up. The process is the same as on the website.

Robinhood Crypto Account Application
To open a U.S.-based crypto account, you must first open a brokerage account. A crypto account cannot be opened alone; it must be linked to the brokerage account.
To apply, go to the website and click the Account tab in the top right. From the drop-down, choose crypto. This creates a separate crypto account with its own account number and documents such as trade confirmations and monthly statements.
The same requirements for brokerage accounts apply to crypto accounts and must continue to be met.
Robinhood Futures Account Application
A separate account is needed at Robinhood to trade futures. It must be linked to a brokerage account, so open that first. Then, go to the Investing menu on the app or website and select the link to apply for futures trading.
Robinhood Robo Account Application
U.S. investors who want a robo account with Robinhood Strategies must first open a brokerage account. After that, log into the website or app and click the Gold icon. On the Gold page, there’s a link to apply for a robo account (a Gold subscription is required).
Robinhood IRA Application
To open an Individual Retirement Account, log into the mobile app and tap the center icon in the bottom menu. This brings up the IRA page. Tap the button to get started, choose Roth or Traditional, and follow the prompts. As with other accounts, you first need a taxable brokerage account; an IRA cannot be opened alone.
Rules in Europe
Europeans cannot open securities accounts at Robinhood. To open crypto accounts, follow the same steps as for securities, but use a tax ID from an accepted European country. An SSN and U.S. address are not required.
Robinhood has also launched stock token trading. These blockchain-based derivatives require another separate account. Log into your crypto account and click the button to apply for stock tokens. This creates a new account.
Fees and Minimums
A U.S. brokerage account can trade stocks, options, and ETFs without commissions. There are no account fees or minimums. A Strategies account costs 0.25% yearly with no commissions and requires a $50 minimum.
Stock tokens in European accounts cost 0.1% per trade.
