Ally Invest Overview
Ally Invest is a part of the online banking giant Ally Bank and it is the sixth largest brokerage house in the U.S. The firm does not charge
hidden fees, IRA setup, maintenance and account inactivity fees. What makes them one of the best brokers
for mutual funds is their rock bottom $9.95 per trade mutual fund transaction fee.
Ally Invest also offers over 12,000 mutual funds, including load and no-load funds from all leading fund families, such as Vanguard and Fidelity.
Their funds cover a full range of investment objectives, strategies and asset classes, including index, target retirement, international,
U.S. equities, and bond funds.
Ally Invest's Mutual Fund Center tool makes it easy to find top mutual funds performers, to screen funds according to your criteria, and
see in-depth breakdowns of mutual fund characteristics.
The firm offers free DRIPs (dividend reinvestment plans) and great customer service. Beginners can place broker-assisted mutual funds trades
for the same low price of $9.95 (the same as Ally Invest fee for online trades), and can learn to trade and pick up investing ideas in the website's friendly user community.
The firm offers user-friendly trading platform with many features and services.
The tools and services that come with the platform include MarketGrader Research Reports, Maxit Tax Manager, Probability Calculator,
Profit and Loss Calculator, Stock, ETF, and Mutual Fund Screeners, and Technical Analysis Tools. One of the most useful tools is Maxit Tax Manager
that tracks traders’ tax liabilities and discerns the tax effects of placing certain trades.

The Probability Calculator allows investors to see the implied volatility associated with trading certain stocks and options, then generate the probabilities of returns
before they place the trade. The Profit and Loss Calculator generates values for potential profits and losses in trades and how those potential profits or losses are affected by
volatility and time. The Stock, ETF, and Mutual Fund Screeners allow investors to find potential investments based on the criteria they enter into the screeners. The Technical
Analysis Tools include chart pattern recognition, price forecasting, and educational resources. Ally Invest also offers tools to implement options strategies and discover potential trades.
Ally Invest LIVE is an alternative platform for active traders that offers streaming quotes and charts within a flexible and fully customizable interface.
Clicking on one of the links in Mutual Funds Screener produces a new web page where the mutual fund order is supposed to be placed. However, the fund ticker symbol appears
in a stock/ETF order form with options for stop loss and limit orders. Obviously, this is the wrong order form. Ally needs to correct this
technical error.
A fund’s price history is displayed on an interactive chart. Comparisons can be made to stocks or indexes. Technical indicators can be shown on
the graph or below. These include RSI, MACD, simple moving average, and more. The price history of American Century Global Gold Fund Investor
Class (BGEIX) goes back to 1989.
The primary disadvantage of Ally seems to be that it doesn’t have any funds that are both no-load and no-transaction-fee. Some
brokerage houses do offer funds that carry neither. E*Trade, for example, has more than 4,400 mutual funds that have neither
load nor transaction fee, while Vanguard has more than 2,000. On the other hand, Ally Invest's fee on mutual fund trades is only $9.95, which is
lower than OptionsHouse ($20) and WellsTrade ($35).
