TD Ameritrade Account Fees
TD Ameritrade doesn’t have a lot of fees outside of its commissions, but there are a few that you should be
aware of. Below will go over which of these other fees, if any, could be relevant to your TD Ameritrade account.
Account Inactivity and Maintenance Fees
The good news is that TD Ameritrade doesn’t charge any inactivity fees. This means that you can open an account and place trades as often or infrequently as you like without worrying about being charged a fee to keep your account open. You could even take a break from trading for a year and there’s still no inactivity fee.
Account Setup Fees
TD Ameritrade really makes the account opening process very easy because there are also no account setup fees and no account minimums required to open an account. In fact, there’s even some better news here. If you are transferring your investment portfolio from another broker, TD Ameritrade will reimburse you for the account transfer fee charged by your previous broker (up to $150).
Account Closing Fees
What if you decide you no longer want to invest or you something else came up that you need your cash for? TD Ameritrade won’t charge you a fee for simply closing your account, and by closing your account here we mean selling off your investments and then simply withdrawing the settled cash from your brokerage account.
Account Transfer Fees
On the other hand, if you don’t want to liquidate your portfolio but instead want to transfer it completely
to another broker TD Ameritrade will charge you a $75 transfer fee. Partial account transfers, where you move
only some of your portfolio’s holdings to another broker, are free.
Withdrawal Fees
If you use a basic ACH transfer to withdraw funds from your TD Ameritrade account it won’t incur any charges, and this is why ACH transfers are the preferred method among investors as they are generally free at most brokers. There are different types of transfers available that can get you your money faster, but these often incur fees. Redeeming by wire transfer at TD Ameritrade, for example, will incur a $25 charge.
Account Statement Fees
Most people prefer to get their monthly/quarterly account statements online through their broker’s website as it’s just easier, and let’s face it, we’d all probably like to eliminate some of the paper mail that clutters the kitchen table. But if you prefer your statements the old fashion way, TD Ameritrade will charge you a $2 fee for each mailing if your account value is less than $10,000. Larger accounts are not subject to this fee.
Data Fees
Another great thing about TD Ameritrade is that they do not charge any fees for the real-time data that comes with your account. Real-time prices, level II quotes, and streaming live news are great features that come with your Ameritrade account at no extra charge, but we will note that professional clients (not individual investors) are assessed a fee for this data.
TD Ameritrade Fees Summary
In summary, TD Ameritrade ranks at the top of the list in terms of non-trade related account fees. They don’t have any account maintenance, inactivity, setup, or closing fees. Certain types of withdrawals are charged a small fee, but these can be avoided using ACH transfers. Transferring your portfolio to another broker is really the only action that will incur an unavoidable fee at TD Ameritrade, and this fee is standard across the industry.
