Etrade Mutual Fund Commissions
Mutual funds that carry a transaction fee cost $19.99. This charge is assessed on each purchase, sale, and exchange.
Etrade mutual fund commission is higher than some other brokers, including Firstrade ($0).
Placing a trade with a live broker over the phone costs an additional $25.
Etrade Mutual Fund Fees
A good selection of mutual funds are available to Etrade customers. The broker's screener generates more than 7,600 products that are available for purchase. More than 4,200 of these carry no load and no transaction fee. These 4,200 funds have a 90-day minimum hold period. If an NTF fund is sold in less than that time, the broker charges a $49.99 short-term redemption fee. This charge is designed to discourage short-term trading inside a fund, which increases costs. Keep in mind that Etrade's redemption fee is in addition to any redemption fee charged by the fund itself.
There are certain fund families that are exempt from Etrade's redemption fee. They are ProFunds, Rydex, and Direxion (although the family's commodity fund DXCTX is not exempt). Money market funds are also exempt.
Some mutual funds at Etrade have no minimum purchase amount, either in a regular brokerage account or an IRA. On the other end of the spectrum, some funds will require as much as $5,000,000. Many funds at Etrade have a $100 minimum purchase amount. Each individual mutual fund sets a minimum initial and subsequent purchase amount. Most of the funds at Etrade have a $0 subsequent minimum.
Sorting through the thousands of mutual funds available at Etrade is fairly simple using the broker's handy screener. Several criteria can be used to make finding products easier. These include Morningstar rating, fund category, and distribution yield. The screener also provides pre-defined searches, such as index funds and alternative investments.
Etrade gives its customers a list of All-Star Funds. These are mutual funds that are pre-selected by the company. They are all no-load, and most of them also carry no transaction fee. In order for a fund to appear on the list, it must have a minimum of three years of above average returns, compared to its peers. Etrade evaluates a fund's expense ratio, manager tenure, and performance and style consistency before adding it to the All-Star list. The broker also ensures the fund is structured using sensible investment theory and process, and has an acceptable level of investment risk that is managed wisely. The funds on the list can be sorted by several categories, including large cap domestic, fixed income, balanced, and international.
