Motif Investing Inactivity Fee

Motif Investing does not charge account inactivity fee.

Motif Investing Maintenance Fee

Motif Investing does not charge annual maintenance fee for regular brokerage individual or joint taxable accounts. The firm also does not have annual IRA maintenance fee or any other similar charges.

Motif Investing IRA Fees

An IRA at Motif Investing can be established free of charge. Roth, Traditional, Rollover, and Transfer IRA’s can be opened with the broker. There is no cost to open a retirement account, and better yet, there is no opening deposit requirement. Motif Investing also charges no annual fee for an IRA. Because a Motif retirement account also has no inactivity fee or low-balance fee, an IRA is essentially fee-free.

At the end of the IRA’s life, the broker does assess a $95 termination fee. There is also a $95 charge to transfer an IRA to another firm. Partial transfers cost just $65, although to qualify for this reduced charge, a balance of at least $100 must remain in the IRA.

Motif Investing IRA Trading Costs

Motif Investing’s pricing schedule is applicable to both retirement and non-retirement accounts. A motif costs $9.95 per transaction. A motif is simply a basket of stocks and ETF’s that has a certain theme or investment philosophy, such as precious metals or bear market. There is a maximum of thirty stocks or ETF’s per motif, and rebalancing one costs $9.95.

There is just one $9.95 charge per motif transaction, regardless of the number of stocks or ETF’s in the motif. Obviously, this system would be cost-effective for investors who want to trade a lot of stocks or exchange-traded funds. A motif has a $250 minimum investment amount.

Individual equities cost $4.95 to buy and sell. This charge is applied whether the stock or ETF is inside a motif or not. The broker has an unusual policy where it passes small fees from regulatory bodies onto the trader. Unfortunately, mutual funds are not available at Motif Investing.

The broker has a current IRA promotion in which new investors can receive a $150 bonus for a transfer of $5,000 or more. The special is valid only for IRA-to-IRA transfers, and expires at the end of 2020. Rollovers and contributions do not count toward the $5,000 minimum.

Target-Date Motifs

There are target-date motifs available. These are designed for retirement savers. The investments in the motif become more conservative as the target-date approaches. At this time, the motif will be composed of 75% fixed-income assets.

Motif Investing IRA Fees Comparison

Motif Investing’s IRA termination fee is rather steep compared to many other brokers. Merrill Edge, for example, charges just $49.95 to close a retirement account, and Vanguard actually charges nothing.

The broker’s transfer fee is also rather expensive. OptionsHouse traders pay only $75 to move an IRA to another firm. Firstrade charges even less—just $50.

Although Motif Investing does offer a reduced fee for partial transfers, it’s still higher than what other brokers charge for this service. Ally Invest customers, for instance, pay $50.

The lack of mutual funds at Motif Investing will surely disappoint many IRA account holders. TD Ameritrade, Fidelity, and Scottrade all have large mutual fund offerings.
