Mutual Funds

Etrade customers can buy and sell approximately 8,000 mutual funds. Almost 4,200 have no load and no transaction fee. The charge for transaction-fee funds is $19.99 on both the buy and sell sides.

Customer Support

Etrade is well known for offering stellar customer support, starting with the opportunity to visit one of their official branch offices around the county. With options to chat live with a technician on your computer, to calling free 800 numbers that also reach live tech support immediately to gaining the insight of a financial consultant to help manage your assets, Etrade is thoroughly covered in the customer support department.

One of the finer aspects that sets Etrade apart from its competitors is its online trading community. Here is the place where traders can connect with each other. Gaining access to others like yourself who are either day traders or long-term investors is invaluable in obtaining a feel for the market sentiment and trending opinions.

Etrade Margin Rates

All in all, Etrade has a long history of being a high quality, dependable, top-rated brokerage firm for long term investors that you can trust with your investments.

Etrade IRA Trading Fees

Within an IRA, Etrade’s regular commission schedule is in effect. Stock and ETF trades are $0. Traders can also use a live broker over the phone to execute a trade. Using this service costs $25.

Etrade has a large selection of NTF mutual funds for traders who don't want to pay a commission to buy and sell securities.

Retirement savers at Etrade have access to several target date mutual funds. These products become less risky as the target date approaches, which is when retirement is expected to begin. Some of these target date funds have no load and no transaction fee.

All ETFs are now available commission-free at Etrade. Many of them have expense ratios below 1.00%. Some mutual funds available through Etrade have expense ratios above 1.00%, so these free-to-trade ETFs might entice a few retirement savers. A selection of the ETFs have portfolios that will be popular with retirees. For example, there are REIT funds, dividend funds, and an S&P 500 fund.

Etrade IRA Fees

Etrade offers Individual Retirement Accounts with no annual fees, no account maintenance fees, no setup fees, no account minimums, and no inactivity fees. The broker's IRA for Minors has no extra fees beyond a regular IRA. There is no minimum opening deposit requirement for a retirement account with the broker.

Despite the above fee policy, Etrade does have some uncommon $25 fees for IRAs. There is a $25 charge for withdrawals prior to the IRS allowed age (59½). A further $25 fee is charged if contributions above IRS guidelines have to be withdrawn. Another $25 charge is applied for recharacterizations. On the flip side, Etrade does not charge a fee to close an IRA as long as there are no securities in the account.

Etrade IRA Fees Comparison

Etrade has a good selection of free-to-trade mutual and exchange-traded funds. Many brokers offer fewer commission-free funds. For example, Merrill Edge and USAA both offer fewer funds with no commissions compared to Etrade. Furthermore, the broker's no opening deposit requirement is better than Charles Schwab's $1,000 minimum.

On the negative side, Etrade's commission for mutual funds trades is higher than many of its rivals, such as Ally Invest ($9.95). Furthermore, Etrade's list of $25 IRA fees is disappointing. Other brokers, such as TD Ameritrade, don't charge fees for the same account activities.
