WellsTrade Fees and Requirements

WellsTrade Fees Rating

WellsTrade charges no commission for stock and ETF trades placed online or through the automated phone system. However, any stock or ETF trade placed over the phone with a live representative comes with a $25 agent-assisted trading fee.

Options traders are charged 65 cents per contract for online or automated telephone trades. Agent-assisted options trades cost $25 plus 65 cents per contract. Exercises and assignments have a $25 fee per transaction.

Mutual funds without load or transaction fees have no trading costs when orders are placed online, through WellsTrade's automated phone service, or with an agent. Transaction-fee funds cost $35 per transaction. Load funds follow the fund prospectus.

Transferring an account to another broker costs $49.95.

Customer Support

WellsTrade Customer Rating

One notable feature of WellsTrade is that customers can access account information and automated phone services around the clock. Live WellsTrade customer support is available by phone Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

However, WellsTrade does not offer online chat, which could be inconvenient for many traders. There's also no AI chatbot, which is becoming more common. Surprisingly, you cannot send internal messages to customer service. While there are many Wells Fargo branches, none are dedicated to WellsTrade services.

The self-help section on WellsTrade's website includes useful information, like changing a password or setting up document delivery preferences. There are also downloadable forms, such as an IRA distribution request and a transfer-on-death kit.

IRAs

WellsTrade IRA Rating

WellsTrade offers Traditional, Roth, and SEP IRAs. Customers can also roll over assets from a former employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b), or governmental 457(b), into an IRA.

Among the mutual funds offered are target-date funds, designed specifically for retirement savers. However, there is no exclusive search function for these funds. They can be found by searching for keywords like ‘target’ and ‘retirement.’ Available fund families include BlackRock and Allianz.

Wells Fargo provides several retirement calculators and tools, including tools for IRA savings potential and early distributions from qualified employer-sponsored retirement plans.

When inquiring about individual 401(k) plans, customer service was not helpful, often transferring calls without providing answers. This suggests a lack of support for this type of plan, despite it being listed on Wells Fargo's website.
