Robinhood’s Referral Program Highlights
• Robinhood has a refer-a-friend program that allows both the referrer and referred friend to
get free fractional shares of stocks.
• A maximum of $1,500 per year can be earned in Robinhood’s refer-a-friend program.
• There are restrictions on buying and selling stocks earned in the program.
Overview of Robinhood’s Referral Program
If you have any friends, neighbors, colleagues, and others who don’t have brokerage accounts with Robinhood, you may want to spread the word. They and you can both earn free shares of eligible stocks.
The basic principle here is really simple: refer someone to Robinhood, and the brokerage firm pays you and the new customer stock bonuses. Of course, there is fine print, so the exact mechanics are a little more complicated.
How Robinhood Referral Works
You have to refer a new customer to Robinhood using a link in your Robinhood account. So yes, you have to actually have a brokerage account at Robinhood to invite friends to the brokerage house. In fact, they don’t have to be friends. They can be neighbors, co-workers, or complete strangers for that matter. Both the referred friend and the referrer must be U.S. residents.
Obviously, you do need to open a Robinhood account if you have not done so already. This is easy to do. Just click on the button in the upper-right corner of the website to sign up. It’s also possible to open an account on the mobile app.
Once your account is open, log in and head to robinhood.com/rewards. This is where you’ll find the link to send out to anyone who may be interested in opening a new brokerage account. There is a button on Robinhood’s rewards page to share the link on Twitter/X.
On the mobile app, the required link can be found by going into the settings page (represented by the little guy in the lower-right corner) and tapping on the button to earn rewards.
The new customer must sign up through the link you share and they must link a debit card or bank account to their new Robinhood account. That new account doesn’t need to be funded, though, which is a major advantage compared to other referral programs out there.
Robinhood Referral Payoff
Once the above conditions are met, both the referrer and the new customer receive stock bonuses. Each account will get a fractional share of a stock. That fraction will be worth between $5 and $200 each. The vast majority of Robinhood accounts (99% to be exact) will receive $5 of stock. The total amount that the referring account can earn in a calendar year is $1,500.
Eligible Stocks
Not all stocks are eligible for the refer-a-friend program. Robinhood chooses the largest two companies
in the 13 sectors of the S&P 500. These companies can change as market values change.
Claiming the Free Stock
When the free stock has been issued, it needs to be claimed. This is easy enough to do because Robinhood will send an email notification to the address on file for the account. Just click or tap on the link and follow the prompts. You can also keep track of the free shares by going to the referral page on either the app or the website.
And one more thing—and this is really important: the free stocks must be claimed within 60 days of release. If they’re not claimed within this timeframe, they expire.
Selling Robinhood Referral Reward Stock
After the reward stock is claimed, Robinhood requires a holding period of 3 market days (for the stock itself) and 30 calendar days (for the cash value). After 30 days, the cash value of the stock can be withdrawn.
Taxation of Reward Stock
Uncle Sam isn’t quite as generous as Robinhood. He will tax gifted stock as both miscellaneous income and as a capital gain if it goes up at the exit point. For example, if you get $5 worth of stock and sell it at $7, you will get a Form 1099-MISC for $5 and a Form 1099-B showing a capital gain of $2.
