Crypto Trading at Moomoo

Key Takeaways:

• Moomoo now offers crypto trading for residents of some US states.

• Over 30 coins can currently be traded in crypto accounts at moomoo.

• Cryptocurrencies can be traded on moomoo’s mobile app but not on its desktop platform.

If you’ve been using moomoo for securities trading, it may be time to check out the broker’s crypto service. Several digital coins can now be traded at low cost. Let’s check it out.

Cryptocurrencies at Moomoo

Through Moomoo Crypto Inc., a subsidiary of moomoo’s parent company Futu Holdings Ltd., moomoo customers can now trade cryptocurrencies. At last count, there are exactly 32 coins available. Examples include:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ripple (XRP)
  • Dogecoin (DOGE)
  • Sui (SUI)
  • Polkadot (DOT)
  • Shiba Inu (SHIB)
  • Celestia (TIA)
  • And more...

To actually trade cryptocurrencies at moomoo, a discrete crypto account is required. It can be opened as an individual taxable cash account; margin is not a possibility. A securities account is required to get this necessary crypto account open; the crypto account can be funded with settled cash from this stock account. It is not possible to fund it directly from a bank account, and only US dollars can be moved in and out (no crypto transfers at this point).

Not all US states are eligible for crypto trading at moomoo right now, either. Most states are eligible, though. Here are some examples:

  • California
  • Oklahoma
  • Maryland
  • Tennessee
  • South Dakota
  • And others...

Moomoo’s terms and conditions prohibit the use of a VPN to sign up for crypto trading from an ineligible state.

Opening a Crypto Account

The necessary cryptocurrency account can be opened on moomoo’s mobile app; it cannot be opened on the website or desktop platform. Log into the app and tap on the Markets icon in the bottom menu. On the Markets page, tap on the Crypto tab at the very top. On the crypto page, you’ll see a button to add crypto trading. Tap on this button and follow the prompts to open the required crypto brokerage account. It took us just a few minutes to get our crypto account open.

Funding a Crypto Account

Once the crypto brokerage account is open, tap on the Accounts tab in the bottom menu on the app. Next, tap on the tile for the crypto account. At the top of the crypto page, tap on the tab for transfers. Here, you’ll be able to move settled cash from the linked securities brokerage account into the crypto account. No other transfers are possible at this time.

Researching Cryptos

On both its mobile app and its desktop platform, moomoo presents details on cryptocurrencies. Just type in a crypto name or ticker symbol in the search field, and you’ll get a profile for that particular coin. A coin can be added to a watchlist, and watchlists sync across both platforms.

On both platforms, a crypto profile will have news articles, trade data, and comments. These details will generally be the same, although crypto profiles on the mobile app have more information on trade details. For example, we found these metrics only on the app:

  • Money Flow
  • Technical sentiment
  • Trade Overview (inflow vs. outflow)

If you don’t yet have a coin in mind, log into the mobile app and go back to the Crypto tab on the Markets page. Here, there is a decent amount of crypto research presented by moomoo.

Placing a Trade

Crypto trades can be submitted only on the mobile app. To place a trade, pull up a coin’s profile. There is an orange Trade button at the bottom. Tap on this and you’ll get the crypto order ticket; it is a little slimmed down compared to the stock ticket.

For example, the crypto version only has one order type (limit) and one duration choice (GTC). The quantity can be set to either dollar amount or coin amount. Near the bottom, Level I quotes update in real time.

Fees and Minimums

Although security trades are commission-free at moomoo, such is not the case with cryptocurrencies. The broker-dealer charges a flat 0.49% on crypto trades. As with equity trades, there are also bid-ask spreads. During our investigation, we found a bid-ask spread of 0.005% on Bitcoin. For Tezos, the spread was 0.22%.

A crypto trade at moomoo has a $1 minimum when the quantity is specified in dollar amount. For a coin amount, the minimum varies by coin.
