How to Trade Crypto at TD Ameritrade

If the rising price of Bitcoin has piqued your interest in cryptocurrencies, you may want to check out the resources TD Ameritrade offers. Here’s an overview:

Bitcoin Futures on TD Ameritrade

One of the great resources TD Ameritrade offers is futures trading. Most securities brokers don’t offer this great service, but TD Ameritrade does. And because the Chicago Mercantile Exchange has added Bitcoin futures to its derivative lineup, TD Ameritrade customers can trade Bitcoin contracts.

After launching Bitcoin futures, the CME added options on Bitcoin contracts. These are another way to trade the digital currency. Because TD Ameritrade offers trading in options on futures, you won’t need a separate account.

Trading Bitcoin on thinkorswim

To submit orders for futures contracts at TD Ameritrade, you’ll need to use thinkorswim. This is the company’s desktop platform. It’s completely free to use, has no account minimums, and it even has a practice mode. This latter feature will allow you to try it out before risking real money. This is a good idea as the software does have a steep learning curve.

The contract symbol for Bitcoin is BTC. This is the root symbol that all contracts will have. After BTC, there will be a letter for the expiration month and a 2-digit code for the expiration year.

On the thinkorswim platform, click on the Trade tab and then select Futures Trader. Here, you’ll find dealing boxes for futures contracts. Just type in the contract you want to trade, and buy and sell buttons will appear.

Alternatively, you can specify a fraction of a coin or dollar. If you choose a dollar amount, Webull’s software will automatically estimate the number of coins and display the amount on the ticket.

If you want to research cryptocurrencies other than the ones Webull offers, just enter their ticker symbols in the search field. When we entered XRP for Ripple, we got a chart with over a year of price data.

AIt is possible to create alerts for cryptocurrencies. At the bottom of the screen on the mobile app is an alert icon. Tap on this to create an alert for any cryptocurrency that is displayed. We were able to create an alert for Ripple based on many criteria, including:

- Price above
