Overview of Mobile Apps at E*TRADE
At E*TRADE, investors can use a variety of platforms. Besides the website, the brokerage firm offers a desktop platform and a browser-based program. Outside the realm of the computer, there are two mobile apps, both of which can be used on tablets. This article will focus on the mobile apps.
Main App at E*TRADE
The regular app from E*TRADE functions on both Apple and Android phones and tablets. After logging in, you’ll see the main menu at the bottom; it has five tabs:
- Accounts
- Watch Lists
- Trade
- Markets
- Menu
The first one, the Accounts page, presents details on every account held at E*TRADE, both bank and investing. An investment account will show the day’s gain and the current value.
The Watch Lists tab is a good place to begin a trading journey. Multiple lists can be created, and it’s really easy to switch among them. A list can be displayed in tile format; here, red tiles show which securities are down for the day.
Select an entry to get its profile. E*TRADE presents a great deal of information on the asset’s profile, including dividend history, option chains, Level II quotes, and a chart with the following tools:
- Lots of technical studies
- Comparisons
- Several plot styles
Open orders can be displayed over a graph, and drawings added from other E*TRADE platforms can also be displayed on a chart. Look for the gear icon in the top-right corner of a chart to turn these features on.
Above a graph, there are buttons to set up a security alert, add a security to a watchlist, or place a trade.
Tap on the Markets button to pull up the day’s market news. At the top of the page, there are tabs for all sorts of information, including news articles, an economic calendar, and a security screener. In the middle of the page, Bloomberg TV streams free of charge. Further down the page, there are market movers, the day’s top earnings reports, and more.
The Menu button brings up a bunch of widgets for account management. You can contact customer service, deposit a check, set up account alerts, download statements, and much more.
Finally, the Trade button at the bottom will bring up the software’s order ticket. Here, we find the following order types:
- Market
- Limit
- Stop
- Stop limit
- Trailing stop ($ and %)
Power App at E*TRADE
The second app E*TRADE has for us is its Power app; this one is similar to the first but has some additional features. For example, the order ticket now has OCO and OTOCO orders. Also, futures and futures options can be traded on the Power app, which is not possible on the regular app.
The Power app has a menu at the bottom with the following icons:
- Dashboard
- Portfolio
- Quote
- Trade
- Menu
The Dashboard is a good place to begin; it contains news articles, a watchlist, and the account summary. The Portfolio page shows the account’s positions along with open orders, balance details, and the account’s performance; multiple timeframes can be selected.
The Menu page is a good place to visit; here, there are lots of links for all sorts of tasks. Beyond account management, there are links to education, webinars, live TV, a price ladder, and mobile check deposit.
Visit an asset’s profile to get all sorts of details. For an ETF, we found social sentiment, top 10 holdings, volatility measures, Level II quotes, option chains, advanced charting, and much more.
Tap on the Quote tab to pull up a search bar to find assets to investigate; recently viewed futures and securities are displayed in the pop-up menu. Tap on one to view its profile. If you want to trade the asset, tap on the Trade icon, and the order form will automatically populate.
Fees and Minimums at E*TRADE for Mobile Trading
E*TRADE imposes no account minimum to use either of its mobile apps; there is no fee, either.
