Vanguard Pattern Day Trader (PDT) Rules in 2026
|
Can I Day Trade on Vanguard?
Although Vanguard is not usually seen as a broker for day traders, the firm does offer some tools for short-term trading. To learn exactly what Vanguard does, and does not, offer day traders, read on.
Products for Day Trading at Vanguard
The following asset classes can be day traded at Vanguard:
- Options
- Bonds
- Stocks
- ETFs
- Closed-end funds
Unfortunately, Vanguard does not offer cryptocurrencies or futures contracts. Also, most over-the-counter stocks are no longer available.
Vanguard PDT Rules
Because Vanguard only allows trading in securities, all day trades are subject to FINRA’s pattern-day trading rules. These rules require at least $25,000 in account equity to continue day trading.
Pricing
With $0 commissions on online stock trades, day trading at Vanguard can be very low cost. Large accounts can also qualify for $0 per-contract fees on options trades.
There are no extra fees for day or swing trading beyond normal trading fees and commissions. Vanguard does not charge any software fees.
Although Vanguard does charge a $20 annual account fee, this can be avoided by choosing electronic delivery of account documents.
Vanguard Day Trading Software
For placing trades, Vanguard offers a mobile app and a website. The mobile app cannot trade options, so some day traders will need to use the website. The website is the stronger platform of the two.
The order ticket for stocks is the same on both platforms. It has 4 order types:
- Market
- Limit
- Stop
- Stop Limit
Vanguard’s trade ticket has 4 transaction types:
- Buy
- Buy to cover
- Sell
- Sell short
On the trade ticket, real-time data is shown for the selected security. Along with price, there are bid and ask prices and their sizes. A refresh button updates these numbers.
Unfortunately, there are no advanced tools that many day and swing traders want, such as direct-access routing, Level II quotes, time & sales data, or a fast order ticket.
Charting must be done on the website because the mobile app has no charting tools. On the website, we found 10 technical indicators. They include:
- Bollinger Bands
- MACD
- Fast stochastics
- Momentum
- Williams % R
There are no drawing tools in the charting system, which limits what day traders can do.
There is no trade button on a security’s profile page. Instead, Vanguard shows a link in the right column: “I want to...trade this stock.” Clicking this link opens the order ticket. When we tested this setup, it felt a bit slow but still workable.
Margin
Margin trading is allowed in taxable accounts at Vanguard, but not in IRAs. Some other accounts also cannot use margin, including custodial accounts and 401k accounts.
A taxable account can trade with leverage under the following borrowing limits:
| Strategy | Initial | Maintenance |
| Long | 50% | 35% (50% for a concentrated account) |
| Short | 50% | Greater of $5 or 35% |
Asset pages do not show margin details for each security, so the table above should be kept in mind.
Vanguard currently charges between 13.5% and 10.25% interest on borrowed funds. Margin balances over $1 million can qualify for lower, negotiated rates.
Webull as a Substitute
Serious day traders may want to look at Webull as an alternative to Vanguard because
Webull offers many day-trading tools that Vanguard does not have.
For example, Webull has advanced trading software that day traders need. In addition to web and mobile trading, Webull has a strong desktop platform with many useful features. There is a widget that tracks how many day trades an account has made. PDT protection can be turned on or off to help prevent an account from being flagged as a pattern day-trading account.
Webull’s platforms include multiple order tickets. One of them is a large-button ticket that allows for very fast order entry. Clicking or tapping a button sends an order right to the market. The usual order confirmation window can be turned off, and buttons can be customized. Examples include:
Buy 200 shares at market
Sell 50 shares at the bid
Buy and sell buttons are color coded (green and red) for easy viewing.
Webull’s software also shows margin details for each ticker symbol. This is helpful because some securities have margin rules that are different from standard requirements.
Besides securities, Webull also offers cryptocurrency trading, which has no PDT rules. This means crypto can be day traded without a $25,000 account balance. Webull currently supports trading in more than 30 coins.
Webull also has much stronger charting tools than Vanguard, with many drawing tools and technical indicators, plus a right-click menu.
