Points to Know:
• thinkorswim is available in multiple formats, including a web-based platform.
• Web thinkorswim has fewer resources than desktop thinkorswim.
• thinkorswim web has a streamlined trade ticket, while thinkorswim desktop has the most advanced trading tools.
Instead of grabbing your mobile phone or launching desktop thinkorswim, you can go straight to Schwab's website where thinkorswim appears as a web-based platform. Here's a rundown on this user-friendly trading platform:
Overview of Web thinkorswim
thinkorswim is available in three formats: mobile app, desktop program, and browser platform. The last of the three will be found on Schwab's website and can also be accessed directly from an internet-connected web browser. Schwab designed thinkorswim web for desktop, laptop, mobile, and tablet browser experiences.
To launch thinkorswim web, log into Schwab's website and click on the Trade tab that appears in the main menu at the top. You'll get a drop-down list of links. Click on the one for thinkorswim web. The platform will generate a new tab.
In the very far left-hand column of the platform, there is a menu with the following 4 choices:
- Positions
- Trade
- Charts
- Scans
Next to this column is another column for Account Summary and Watchlists. And the final column on the right is an area for one of the 4 choices noted above. The Scans tab produces a stock screener. The Trade tab has all sorts of useful features, including option chains, a small chart, time & sales data, and Level II quotes.
If you have more than one account, it's possible to shuffle among them with a drop-down menu that appears in the left-hand column under Account Summary.

Charting on Web thinkorswim
Click on the Charts tab in the far left-hand column and the right-hand space will fill with a chart. There is a small double arrow to the left of the chart; click on this to expand the graph nearly the full width of the web browser.
Charts on thinkorswim web include built-in drawing tools and a library of hundreds of studies. While this is a strong charting setup for a browser platform, thinkorswim desktop remains the most powerful version for charting, customization, and technical analysis.
There is no right-click menu on a chart, although buy and sell buttons are at the top of a graph.
Order Entry
Click on either trade button, and thinkorswim's order ticket will appear beneath the graph. The web platform uses a streamlined order-entry workflow that appears in the same window, along with a profit/loss graph for supported trades. Desktop thinkorswim still has the most advanced order-entry setup in the thinkorswim family. Trade types and advanced order choices available in thinkorswim include:
- Trailing stop
- Contingent
- Blast All
- 1st triggers OCO (bracket order)
Simulated Trading
If you need help learning the order ticket or any other feature on the platform, there is a practice mode called paperMoney. Simply click on the paperMoney button found under Account Summary, and the platform will switch to a demo mode with $100,000 of virtual buying power.
Awards
Fees and Minimums
Schwab clients get access to the thinkorswim platform suite for no charge. However, Schwab's standard pricing applies to trades placed through each platform. There is no account minimum to use thinkorswim. With a Guest Pass, available on this page, you can try thinkorswim for 30 days with no Schwab account required.
