Research Details
Zacks Trade customers get free access to the Zacks Rank, a proprietary grading tool for major stocks. Zacks Investment Research uses changes in earnings estimates and EPS surprises to calculate its stock scores; these scores are on a 1 to 5 scale. The specific recommendations these reports give are as follows:
- 1: Strong Buy
- 2: Buy
- 3: Hold
- 4: Sell
- 5: Strong Sell
Approximately 5% of stocks fall into the first and last categories. Roughly 15% are classified as Buy or Sell. And roughly 60% are rated Hold.
Historically, stocks in the first category (Strong Buy) have outperformed the S&P 500 by a significant margin. The average annual return from 1988 to 2025 for Strong Buy stocks is 23.5%; the return for the S&P 500 over the same time frame is 11.0%.
To make these grades, Zacks Investment Research scans data from more than 3,000 analysts working with over 150 brokerage houses. The research firm monitors more than 200,000 earnings estimates.
Inside every Zacks Trade account is a screener that can search for stocks based on these criteria and other data points, including:
- Sector
- Theme (such as AI, resource scarcity, and disruptive communications)
- Industry
- Recent changes in analysts’ forecasts
- Stocks with recent upgrades
It’s possible with a simple click of the mouse to place a trade from the search results.
Both individual and institutional investors can use the free research at Zacks Trade.
How to Access the Research
It’s really easy to find Zacks’ investment research after your brokerage account is open. On the client portal (the website), simply click on the Research tab and then select the Discover tab in the drop-down window.
If you’re on Zacks Trade Pro (the desktop platform), click the blue New Window button in the upper-left corner. In the long drop-down list of choices, select the link for Analyst Research and Market Commentary.
