How to Transfer an Account Between TradeStation and Robinhood

If you’re considering moving your TradeStation account to Robinhood, or vice versa, we’ll show you exactly how to do it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to transferring your account between these two brokers.

Transfer From TradeStation to Robinhood

TradeStation offers several transfer methods, including the ACAT transfer, which Robinhood uses. Follow these steps to transfer your TradeStation account to Robinhood using ACAT:

Step #1: Open a new Robinhood account: 1% IRA match and up to $200 FREE stock at Robinhood.

If you already have a Robinhood account, you can use it as long as it has the same name and account type. Note that transferring from a joint account to an individual account through ACAT is not possible. If the name on your Robinhood account has legally changed, you can update it through customer service.

Step #2: With the Robinhood account ready to receive an ACAT transfer, prepare both your Robinhood and TradeStation accounts. TradeStation offers trading in assets that cannot be moved to Robinhood due to either Robinhood’s limitations or ACAT restrictions. These include:

  • Mutual funds
  • Foreign stocks
  • Cryptocurrencies
  • Forex
  • Futures
  • Most over-the-counter stocks
  • Options that expire in less than a week
  • Warrants
  • Precious metals

These investments must either be left behind in a partial transfer, moved to a separate TradeStation account in a full transfer, or sold with the cash balance transferred through ACAT.

If you plan to transfer options or a margin debit, make sure your Robinhood account has the necessary permissions. You can do this by logging into the app, tapping on the account icon in the bottom-right corner, selecting the settings icon in the upper-left corner, and navigating to the Investing link. Then scroll to the options and margin settings.

While both brokers support fractional-share trading, partial shares cannot be moved through ACAT. These will need to be sold beforehand. If not, TradeStation will convert them to cash before the transfer.

Step #3: Once both accounts are set up and ready, request the transfer through Robinhood, as ACAT transfers are initiated by the receiving firm. Use the Robinhood mobile app or website to start the process.

On the website, go to the Account link in the upper-right corner and select the Transfers option from the drop-down menu.

On the next page, choose the option to transfer an account into Robinhood. This will bring up a list of brokerage firms to choose from. Select TradeStation and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the transfer.

Assuming no errors are made, the transfer should take about a week and a half. TradeStation doesn’t charge for outgoing transfers, and Robinhood doesn’t charge for incoming transfers.

Transfer From Robinhood to TradeStation

TradeStation accepts incoming electronic transfers for most assets, making it easy to move stocks, ETFs, and options (but not cryptocurrencies) from Robinhood.

To get started, open a new TradeStation account if you don’t already have one.

Current promotion: Get up to $150 cash bonus with a $5,000+ qualifying deposit

Make sure the account type and name match your Robinhood account (individual or Traditional/ROTH IRA). If these details don’t match, the transfer could be rejected.

Once your TradeStation account is set up, submit a transfer request through TradeStation’s website. Because the receiving broker handles the paperwork, you don’t need to notify Robinhood.

To start the ACAT transfer, go to the funds transfer page on the TradeStation website and select the Transfer Account link. TradeStation will provide you with an ACATS form in pdf format, which you’ll need to complete and send back. Email it to TradeStation at ClientServices@tradestation.com to speed up the process. Include a copy of your most recent Robinhood account statement, as it’s required by TradeStation.

TradeStation’s form allows for either a full or partial transfer. Keep in mind that cryptocurrencies can’t be moved through the ACATS system, so do not attempt to transfer any crypto positions from Robinhood.

Cost of Transferring

Transferring from Robinhood to TradeStation will incur a $100 fee from Robinhood for either a full or partial transfer.
