ACATS Transfer Out of Interactive Brokers Account
If you have a brokerage account with Interactive Brokers and want to move to another broker, like
Charles Schwab, the fully electronic ACATS
transfer system makes the process fairly simple.
Transfer from Interactive Brokers to Another Broker
To move assets from IBKR to Schwab or any other broker, follow these steps:
Step One:
An account must be fully open at the receiving firm. Schwab provides a digital application on its website and mobile app if you don’t already have an account with the same name and account type. Schwab will accept transfers into both self-directed brokerage accounts and its automated advisory accounts, although only cash can be transferred into a robo account.
Step Two: Next, prepare the Interactive Brokers account. If you’re moving into a robo-advisor account, securities will need to be liquidated first. For transfers into a self-directed Schwab account, many securities can be transferred in-kind. Futures and forex positions cannot be moved through the ACATS system and must be closed or left behind. Be sure to close out option contracts that are close to expiration.
Step Three: Some foreign stocks, OTC securities, and certain mutual funds may not be eligible for transfer. Schwab supports trading in these asset types, but acceptance can vary by security, so it’s best to confirm eligibility in advance. Add options and margin permissions at Schwab if they will be needed for incoming positions.
Step Four: Finally, submit the transfer request with the receiving firm,
which in this case is Schwab. On the website, hover over the Move Money tab in the top menu and
select Transfers & Payments -> Transfer an Account. Enter the details for the Interactive Brokers account and submit the request.
